8 Tips & Tricks When Studying In College

You know what they say, for each credit hour you take in college you need to have 2-3 hours of studying. I will not disagree with that at all, but there are a few secrets about what might happen when studying. So here are 8 tips and tricks when studying in college.

1. Know who you are studying with.

Having a study session is fun, but you need to know who you're studying with if your friends going to be a distraction to you and it ends up being a giggle session instead.

2. Make a plan

Before you even get started studying make a list of what needs to get first. It doesn’t you a bit of good if you are doing an easy assignment that’s not due until next week but you have a hard assignment due tomorrow. Make a plan!!

3. Random conversation will happen...this is your warning!

It’s late you’ve been in the Library for six or seven hours you might take out your headphones to find your friends arguing about who would win in a fight Remmie or Stuart Little? Anything can and will happen, just roll with it.

4. Make rewards

Make rewards for yourself, after you finish a really hard assignment reward yourself by allowing yourself to check your phone for five minutes or get a snack or something to drink. Talk to the people you're studying with to see if they want to go to a Taco Bell or on a Canes run.

5. Plan study breaks

Studies show that after one hour of hard studying you should take a 10-15 min break. So put your phone away, get some homework done your Snapchat streak will still be there when you get back.

6. Music

Some people can listen to music while they study some can’t. Know what works for you, I personally like to listen to music when I study because it's easier to block out than conversation, but I also know that I can’t listen to music with lyrics when doing readings in my textbook so I have an instrumental playlist on my Spotify.

7. Distractions

If you are easily distracted then I would suggest going and finding a place in the stacks to studying where it's nice and quiet. But for distractions cut them out. Just tell your friends, mom, bf/gf, that you need to study and log off for 20 minutes

8. Resources

If you are struggling in a class and need help studying, use your campus resources talk to your professor. If you are in a learning community, greek life, talk to them they will help you. Ask your friends who are also in your class and see if they are struggling too or see if they can help you.

College is no cake walk, you may not have needed to study in high school but you will have to in college. There is no way around it but don’t be afraid! You aren’t the only in who needs to study. Keep your head up and remember the best way to learn something is not studying it 18 of 24 hours in a day, it's having interest in what you are learning.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
