Clemson University

Adjusting to college life can be difficult at first. Living away from home and trying to earn a degree at the same time is sometimes overwhelming. But, college is so much fun and worth every ounce of stress. You get to make new friends, memories, and get smarter. Follow these 8 tips, are you are golden.

1. Learn how to study.

It is pretty normal for rising freshman and even sophomores to struggle with studying. But, the earlier you learn how to, the better off you will be. Keep in mind that everyone studies differently. Ask for help when you need it.

2. Go to all home sporting events.

As a Clemson student, it's easy to have school spirit. Going to all home games is a great way to get involved in the school and community. You will make memories that will last a lifetime.

3. Call your parents.

Everyone handles leaving home for the first time differently, but keep in mind this is a big change for your parents, too. It's a step towards growing up for the both of you. At least call once a week to let them know you are alive if you don't live close to home. They will be thankful you did.

4. Talk advantage of the resources provided to you.

The writing center and free tutoring sessions can help you immensely, if you let them. Some people really have an issue with asking for help, that's when you have to swallow your pride and suck it up. You aren't here to throw $80,000+ down the drain. Plus, failing isn't attractive.

5. Be active.

Living a healthy lifestyle, working out, exercise, or whatever you wanna call it, do it. The freshman 15 is alive and well and is waiting for your arrival. Go ahead and get a pair of nice tennis shoes while you're at it, because you will be doing a lot of walking.

6. Get involved.

Join an organization or club to help get involved on campus. If you are far away from home, it will make the huge campus feel smaller.

7. Make friends.

College is the perfect time to make life long friends. Surround yourself with people who make you happy. You are the company that you keep.

8. Make it count.

Take chances, study hard, make bad choices, and just enjoy it. College goes by so fast and you will soon be wondering where the time has gone. Soak up every ounce of it. Time flies when you're having fun, right?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register.
