1. Recruitment is just as stressful as it would have been as a freshman, more so in that there are less sororities who want a junior. Recruitment may have been the worst four days of my life, but in the end it was worth it.
2. It’s crazy to join a sisterhood that girls you’ve known for years are already in. You become better friends with these girls and make a ton of new friends, too. Walking across campus and having a dozen girls wave at you makes you feel like you’re a part of something.
3. Although I was already in other organizations, being a part of an international sorority with chapters and alumnae across the nation is an amazing feeling. The first sorority magazine that I got is displayed on a shelf in my bedroom. Being part of an organization like this makes you proud.
4. This is bigger than you--that picture of you drinking at a party on Facebook or conversations you have in the library that get overheard? Those reflect upon you and upon your sorority. It’s cliché, but it’s true that you are always wearing your letters.
5. Being in a sorority is a big time commitment, from new member ed to chapter, from sisterhoods to socials, there is always something that you could be doing and should be doing and:
6. You’re busy. And that’s okay, maybe you won’t be the most active member in your pledge class, maybe you won’t be the new member that everyone is BFFs with, but these girls love you. The ones that you already knew are excited to have you as a part of their sisterhood, the new sisters that you meet understand and love you anyway.
7. It is totally OK to be so so, so sick of new member ed. I’ve gone through pledge ed/ new member ed/ whatever you want to call it for three different organizations now. My sorority wasn’t the worst new member ed, but that did not mean that I wasn’t sick to death of it. How many times will I have to learn the Greek alphabet?! (Even though, Greek is part of my major and I REALLY should have already known it.) How many different dates and founders will I have to learn? Hopefully no more, because:
8. It is such an amazing feeling to have finally found your home.
