Not everyone enjoys hockey, the greatest sport on Earth. But for those of us who do enjoy the finer things in life, there are many reasons for us to be excited that October is here, bringing the beginning of the season.
1. Your team winning brings meaning back into your life
Living in northwest Pennsylvania, there are a lot of Pittsburgh fans in the area. With the Penguins being the most recent Stanley Cup champions, their fans have reason to be excited for this season.
2. Your team losing gives you reason to take out all your pent up anger
Screaming at the TV really is an excellent stress reliever.
3. Hockey Jerseys come back into style
My team’s jersey is one of my favorite sweaters. It’s a defining piece in any fan’s wardrobe.
4. You make new friends…
Coming across someone in the same colors as you makes for immediate friendship. The other guy has excellent taste, after all.
5. … Or enemies
Seeing someone in another team’s colors, especially one in your team’s division, means that you two can’t be friends until may… or ever, for that matter.
6. You know what to ask for as a Christmas gift
Game tickets make for great stocking stuffers, and throw a team hat or tuque* in there too. You never know when your favorite player might have a hat-trick.
Tuque- from toque: a small, close-fitting woolen knit cap. Often has a pom-pom at the top. Very Canadian.
7. There’s nothing like a hockey fight to get the adrenaline going
The fight can change the game’s momentum, as well as the faces of those involved. Besides, there’s nothing like legal public violence.
8. You have something to talk about the next day with friends
If the game was good, you can bet your productivity won’t be.
There are myriads of other reasons to be eager for hockey season, and if you're a fan, you absolutely should be excited. Many of the opening games so far have been close and competitive. It may only be October, but I can't wait for my Christmas tickets.
