8 Reasons Why You Should Visit NYC In The Winter

As a child growing up in the Big Apple, I have seen its core at all times of the year. What core could I possibly be talking about, other than Manhattan? Although the summer, spring and autumn are beautiful, there is no better time to experience New York City than in the winter around the holidays. While the hustle and bustle of the Great White Way can overwhelm some, these are my reasons for my appreciation of the city at winter time.

1. Weather

Whoever said, "The weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful" was right. Just because the winter weather may be less than ideal to some, use it as an excuse to make your favorite hot chocolate, and cozy on up next to someone you love.... or your cat... I guess that depends on availability!

3. Rockefeller Center / Bryant Park

I combine the two because they both feature similar qualities. Rockefeller Center, iconically the home of the massive pine, and Bryant Park both offer ice skating and a taste of Winter Wonderland in the middle of the capital of industrialization. It's the feel of small village in a huge city.

4. Radio City Christmas Spectacular

From the feeling it sparks to the live animals they bring out on stage, this show is definitely a must-see for all. Although I've seen it twice, I think everyone needs to experience this show at least once in their lives! I mean, what little girl didn't want to be a Rockette at some point?

5. Window displays

Nothing says "New York at winter" more than going to the big name department stores to check out the window displays. Saks Fifth Avenue always takes the window decorating to a whole new level. And who knows? Maybe something just as eye-catching will be inside!

6. Shopping

I genuinely think the holidays are about spending time with family and recognizing how fortunate you are. However, retail has become a prominent component to the holiday season, and I know I am not the only person who loves me some shopping! Shopping in NYC during the holiday season is like a giant game; everyone wants the nicest product, and there can only be so many takers!

7. Decor

The lights, the windows, the Tenenbaums, the entire feel of the city changes when December rolls around. The industrial grays are overpowered by pine greens and scarlet reds. The entire atmosphere, a once high-paced city, transforms into something more cozy and intimate.

8. Scenery

Just like the decor and weather, the entire scene of Manhattan changes. The monochromatic scheme of the city becomes bombarded with colorful lights, people, and decorations. The image is almost an entirely different setting. It truly is amazing.

All in all, if there is one time to see Manhattan, that time should be from late November through December/early January. While you may get hung up behind some overeager tourists, the experience is necessary for at least one time. As an avid city-goer and having been at all times of the year, I assure you that nothing compares to NYC in wintertime.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
