Recently ranked among the 10 best food cities in the United States by the Washington Post, Houston is a foodie wonderland. Ranked alongside classic cities like New York, L.A., and San Francisco, Houston offers cuisines ranging from Vietnamese to Tex-Mex to authentic Sichuan to good ol' fashioned Texas BBQ. I have compiled a list of restaurants and food trucks you must try if you visit the Space City, and I promise you, you won't be disappointed.
1. Pho Saigon
Contrary to popular belief that Houston is a city only for Tex-Mex and BBQ, some chefs argue that Houston should actually be known for its pho, due in large part to the giant Vietnamese population here. This place is nothing fancy, but the food will surely knock your socks off and is wallet friendly. Be sure to try the No. 9 and the spring rolls.
2. Dolce Vita
Literally the "sweet life" and the mantra of most Romans, Dolce Vita does not disappoint. With its wood-fired pizzas, carefully crafted pastas, and even a piece of toast covered in melted cheese and truffles and topped with a fried egg, coupled with twinkle lights, outdoor patio seating, and an indoor bar, this is a perfect date night spot. Make sure to make a reservation if you're going on the weekend!
3. Ninfa's
I have one word for you: fajitas. It is argued that Mama Ninfa created the first ever fajita and, honestly, it doesn't matter if this is true or not because the point is: These are the best damn fajitas I have ever had. Vegetarians are not welcome.
4. Killen's
Yes, you will stand in line for more than an hour. Yes, it's about a 30-45 minute drive outside of Houston. Yes, it's totally worth it and yes, they offer you free beer while you wait. Go hungry, go with a group, and order one of everything (including the dessert -- the bread pudding should not be missed).
5. Helen Greek Food and Wine
Let me preface this by reiterating how much I hate Rice Village and how much I avoid it. Now, let me tell you that one of my favorite restaurants in Houston is located in Rice Village and is the only reason you'll ever see me there. Greek food is also my second favorite cuisine next to Vietnamese. Go with a parent, relative, or any older person who wants to buy you a meal because it can get expensive. Order the octopus, the shawarma, the fried cheese, and the meatballs. Also, get some wine because their wine list is the second best Greek wine list in the USA.
6. Mala Sichuan
This. Place. Rocks. And, this place made me love tofu. With locations in Chinatown and Montrose, there's no reason you shouldn't go to Mala. Order things like the Mapo tofu, sauteed morning glory, peanut noodles, giant bowls of spicy fish, and any meat or chicken dish. Actually, just order everything.
7. MF Sushi
Another place you want to be taken to and another place you will definitely need a reservation for, MF is way more than just sushi. Tuna tartar with a quail egg and truffles, baked scallops, Japanese eggplant on its own grill, and seared duck are all things you definitely need to try.
8. Tacos Tierra Caliente
Literally parked in the parking lot of a convenience shop, Tacos Tierra Caliente was recently voted the No. 7 best tacos in the United States. Go with a group and order every taco and the quesadillas, and make sure to add all toppings to the tacos. After you've ordered, take your tacos across the street to West Alabama Ice House, where the beers come cheap and you're sure to see some true Montrose residents.
Did I mention that you probably won't spend more than six or seven dollars? And, it'll be the best six dollars you ever spend.
