Living in a town like Greenville, there's plenty to do. Being a broke college student, that elliminates some of those things, but definitely not all of them! Here's a list of fun free stuff to do in the Upstate if you have a free day!
1. Swamp Rabbit Trail
Greenville County Council bought the old rail bed between Greenville and Travelers Rest and turned it into a 21 mile, multi-use path. Take the day to ride your bike up and down it, stop in Travelers Rest for lunch, take a walk this fall when the weather is gorgeous, or even do some geo-caching and find one of the 125 active caches along the trail.
2. Mice on Main
I wouldn't normally go looking for mice, but in Greenville, it takes on a whole new meaning. A student at Christ Church Episcopal School made his senior project to be installing nine individual mice sculptures around Downtown Greenville. Make it your project one day to find all of them.
3. Falls Park
Falls Park on the Reedy is a gorgeous park that's perfect for taking a walk through Greenville. With the gorgeous bridge, flowers everywhere, and waterfalls as well as the natural stonework, it's a beautiful place to spend the afternoon.
4. Poinsett Bridge
The bridge was constructed in 1820, and is thought to be the oldest surviving bridge in the state. It originally connected Charleston and Columbia with North Carolina and Tennessee. At 14 feet tall and 130 feet long, this Gothic arch stone bridge is definitely on the must-see list.
5. Bald Rock
From Bald Rock, you can see a panoramic view of Table Rock Mountain as well as Pickens and Greenville counties. Can you say Instagram? #nofilter
6. Pretty Place
This chapel is so gorgeous that people often reserve it for weddings and other private events. Though it is technically private property owned by the YMCA, they let anyone go as long as it isn't being used for services for their campers.
7. Art Museum
Yes, admission is free. With exhibits constantly changing, you're sure to see something new each time you go. They also hold workshops for different skills, such as calligraphy, so make sure you go to their website and check out all that they have to offer.
8. Shoeless Joe Jackson Museum
Since he was born in Greenville and eventually returned to open a barbeque restaurant and liquor store here, it only makes sense that his museum would be located here. He still holds the third highest batting average in all of baseball history. Be sure to stop by to see a collection of records, artifacts, photographs, film, and other items associated with the baseball great.
