How to keep your hair healthy and not break the bank.

If you're anything like me, you grew up in a house with a mom who was a cosmetologist and in a family where hair was the top priority. You probably didn't get you hair cut by somebody other than your mom until you were 20 years old and it was then by your friend with craft scissors (extra tip: don't do that). You had your hair colored for the first time when you were 12 and had bangs for a long time. But, chances are you are nothing like me because this is a freakishly small demographic! So, don't worry, I've done the work for you and have learned not to break the bank along the way.

Disclaimer: I am not a professional and I have caucasian hair so this isn't necessarily comprehensive, just what I know personally to be foolproof!

1. Start wearing your hair natural.

I know. There's just something we all love about going to the salon, using cool new stuff on our hair, and looking polished every day. I realize that maybe you don't feel comfortable with your hair as is — that's okay! But, here's the thing: Chances are your hair looks totally amazing naturally (or with just a little product) and you don't even realize it. As an added bonus, your hair will become much healthier. If you don't feel comfortable with it down and natural, give it a chance to breathe and wear it up in a ponytail or messy bun.

2. Spend your money on conditioner.

I can't say this enough so I'll say it again: Spend your money on conditioner. Sometimes shampoo does matter, but not a lot. Personally, I use $1 shampoo and more expensive conditioner. Conditioner is what keeps your hair nourished, strong and smooth. $$$ = Conditioner.

3. Avoid heat.

Like I said before, I know; however, heat protectant spray is no match for not using heat at all. I get asked frequently about how my hair grows so quickly and this is my answer (along with genetics, but still). Only blow-dry when you need to. Curl or straighten if you must. You have my word, though, that your hair will grow so much more quickly and will be 100 times more healthy if you cut down on heat usage. You'll be saving money in the long run because of less money on treatments for damage!

4. Be careful with your heat.

Spending money on good heat tools is a good place for your money to go. Research your tools, ask friends, and know that if you spring for more money here, again, you'll be spending less later on haircuts for split ends and conditioning treatments for fried hair.

5. Brush your hair.

Brushing your hair stimulates your scalp, which increases blood flow to blood vessels, which supply your hair follicles with the nutrients they need to grow. This is science and is also important if you want your hair to grow and be healthy. Additionally, it takes the oil from your scalp to nourish your hair. Science. Also, me telling you that this works because it does. This is 100% free, so there's no losing.

6. Dry shampoo.

I honestly don't know if this is good for your hair growth-wise, but this I do know: It'll save you probably millions of hours over your lifetime. Don't forget to brush it out or rub it in so that you don't have white stuff in your hair! I like to spray mine on and just shower my body to save time, but also spraying some in your roots is good for volume. Suave has a great formula for $3.99 and you can't beat that.

7. Don't be afraid to branch out.

For years I have used this olive oil cream that is made for ethnic hair that is $4.99 a bottle and that lasts me for at least a year. It is one of the best things that has ever happened to me and my hair has a night and day difference between when I do and do not use it. If you need something more nourishing, experiment and check what's out there!

8. TRESemmé hair spray in the green can.

This isn't really a tip, it's just me telling you that this is the best hairspray I think that money can buy and everyone should use it no matter what kind of hair they have. It isn't sticky or stiff, but it holds up. It's about $4.50 and the can is huge. Also, my mom carries a travel sized can with her wherever she goes, so you know it's essential.

With all the saved time and money you have on your hands you could start investing money responsibly and study extra hard for your classes! But, let's be honest: You will have extra money to go to Chipotle and more time to sleep in. If that is what I have provided you with, then I have done a truly good thing.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
