The Eight Basic Halloween Costumes You'll Encounter This Year

As Halloween comes creeping up around the corner, the rush is on to find the perfect costume. Sure, everyone loves Halloween, but for girls, the perfect costume is extremely important. Whether it’s punny, scary, or a little slutty, you’re guaranteed to see it all at your college Halloween parties.

Here’s a list of a few of the costumes you're guaranteed to encounter, as well as some possible inspiration for your own!

1. The Basic Sexy *Insert Animal Name*

This costume usually requires little-to-no effort, but it’s always a crowd pleaser. Why? It’s simple, it’s sexy, and it offers a lot of wiggle room as to what you can actually wear along with whatever animal ears you pick. Don’t feel like going all out with your costume? Throw on a black body-con dress or some leggings and a crop top, top it off with your animal ears of choice (bunny, cat, mouse, leopard, etc.) and bam, you’re all set.

2. The Group

This one usually consists of about six to 10+ girls and can be pretty creative if they put some thought in to it. Sure, the classic ones are still cute, like M&M's body-con dresses, but this trend has grown pretty popular on social media and a lot of great ideas can be found on Pinterest. Some particularly clever ones are Taco Bell sauces, the months of the year, social media logos, and a deck of cards!

3. The School Girl

When it comes to costumes, nothing is more classic than the sexy school girl. Literally, all you need is a plaid skirt, a white button-down, some nerd glasses, and maybe some knee-highs. Despite its simplicity, this costume always looks great and can be as sexy or as innocent as you want it to be!

4. The Couple

You will definitely encounter at least a handful of couple costumes at whatever party you go to, making you low-key wish you had an s/o of your own to coordinate with. These are almost always cute though, and even cuter the more into it they get. The possibilities are pretty endless, whether they decide to go as a famous duo (Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Popeye and Olive Oyl, Bonnie and Clyde), a classic combination (like peanut butter and jelly), or just straight-up matching costumes.

5. The Pun Master

This one definitely takes some creativity and quirkiness. These girls are not afraid to look a little silly or to enthusiastically explain their “punny-ness” to anyone that looks a little confused. If you can think of ones on your own, that’s bonus points for creativity, but there are a few that can be found online to inspire you. A personal favorite being the “Holy Cow”--a cow with a halo--and “Oh Deer!”--a deer with literally just the word “oh!” written somewhere on the costume. This is definitely a fun route to take if you like to stand out!

6. The Sexy Cop

Another classic (and possible contender for my own costume this year), the sexy cop is timeless and fun. Whether you go all out with one of the official costumes you can buy, or go more makeshift, it’s pretty much always going to be a hit. This category can also include the sexy firefighter, sexy swat team, sexy jailbird….the list goes on.

7. The Special-Effects Makeup Pro

If you’re in college, odds are this girl is some sort of theater or art major, and her makeup skills are on point. It can range from really pretty, intricate makeup to match her costume to some really gruesome, gory wound that basically is the costume. Either way, you’ll be impressed, and probably gush over how amazing her skills are if you run in to each other in the bathroom.

8. The Sexy Superhero

This one is an all-around favorite. I mean, odds are most of these girls have never read these comic books, but who cares? They look great! This could also be lumped in with the group costume if the girls all decide to be a variety of superheroes together. Besides, who doesn’t want to feel like Superwoman?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
