Being an English major for the past three years has been amazing. I love my major and would never change it. However, the assumptions people make about English majors are sometimes completely and utterly wrong. So much so, they’re actually hilarious. So if you are an English major, I bet someone has assumed these things about you.

1. You want to be a teacher.

No I do not want to be a teacher. There are SO many things you can do with an English major besides be a teacher. You could work in publishing, a newspaper, go to law school, or work in media. The possibilities are literally endless

2. You’re a spelling champ.

I cannot spell to save my life. There are words I still get confused about. The other day in my notes I wrote “analyize.” Yes. I, an English major, did not spell “analyize” right. Sometimes we make mistakes! We’re only human.

3. You’re the Queen of Grammar.

People LOVE to correct my grammar. They get some sick satisfaction out of it, especially when they remind me I’m the English major. I’m sorry if every once in a while I mess up my “there/their/they’re.” It isn’t the end of the world!

4. You’re a book worm.

I absolutely love to read. That being said, the English major requires a lot of reading. People somehow assume I have endless time to read for pleasure in addition to all the reading I do for my major. I’m sorry, but there are only 24 hours in the day.

5. You need to improve your ability to speak the English language.

People think they are HILARIOUS when I tell them I’m an English major and they tell me my English seems fine. Ha. Ha. Ha. That is SO funny to me.

6. You’re an introvert.

Personally, I am an introvert. But I have met English majors who are extroverts. There’s some sort of assumption that English majors are these losers who just want to read a book alone in their room. English majors like to go out with friends too!

7. You want to be a best selling author.

Again, personally I love writing fiction. But I’ve met English majors who hate creative writing.

8. You love to write essays.

When I first told people I wanted to major in English they said, “you must LOVE to write essays.” I HATE to write essays. It’s stressful, it’s hard, it takes forever, why would I enjoy that? Are there some essays I love to write because I’m really passionate about my topic? Yes, of course. But there are also essays I write just to get them over with.

The moral of the story is English majors come in many different shapes and sizes. Don’t try to generalize or assume things about us! Most of us will surprise you!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
