With the start of October comes one of the best holidays ever: Halloween. If your love for this holiday didn’t start from the young age of 5-years-old when you were provided with all the free candy that the world had to offer, then I’m not sure what went askew during your childhood. As we aged, the holiday became less about candy (although the candy is still my favorite part) and more about who had the best costumes.
Who is to say what makes a costume the “best”? Is it the one that highlights how long your legs are? The one that looks the most authentic?
For a college girl on a budget, one of the ways to have the “best” costume is to find inexpensive materials to make a creative and easy costume. These seven ideas are all simple, cute, and easy on your budget.
Mario or Luigi:
Or, Mario and Luigi. Because who doesn’t want to pretend to be a speed racer all night? You’ll look so fierce rocking suspenders over your red top. Plus, you’ll be comfortable in spandex, Soffes, or whatever shorts you choose, and a t-shirt.
Scarecrow:
Not only is this simple, but it goes well with autumn — perfect to celebrate this magnificent time of year. Throw on that flannel you usually wear to Broken, a pair of overalls -- or denim shorts will do -- and a straw hat.
Michelle Tanner:
Dressing like your favorite child star from "Full House" will be a great throwback to your childhood. Channel your inner 90s self with a high pony tail, held in place by a scrunchie, of course, and a brightly colored top and overalls.
Rosie the Riveter:
If you enjoy feminism at all, look no further to find a costume. You’ll be the absolute icon of women’s equality in your denim button down top and bright-red lipstick and bandana. Just be sure to flex your bicep muscles all night so people know exactly who you are.
Barbie:
Yet another classic throwback to childhood. While this idea may be best suited to the blondes, this is an easy costume for anyone. Find the brightest pink dress and lipstick and you’re set. Want to go the extra mile? Print off a Barbie tag and attach that somewhere on your dress.
Katy Perry from the “Roar” Music Video:
Don’t worry, brunettes; I have a plan just for you too. Remember that grass skirt you bought and wore once? Whip that out and grab your fiercest cheetah print shirt. Katy Perry’s tropical-themed outfit will serve as the perfect way to reminisce about summer.
Mary Poppins:
Everyone will immediately recognize this supercalifragilisticexpialidocious outfit. You’ll look refined in your calf-length black skirt, white button down, red bowtie, and black umbrella. And obviously don’t forget the spoonfuls of sugar!
You’re now set for any and all nights of Halloween. Snag some free candy and rock the runway that is Oxford in your creative costume.
