Working in restaurants can be both an amazing and dreadful experience. Working in restaurants will teach you some valuable life lessons as well as question your people skills. Whether you are in the front or back of the house I am sure you can relate to the things learned while being a restaurant employee:

1. You are not going to get along with everyone and not everyone will like you.

It is a fact no matter how likeable you are people will dislike you and not get along with you. Your coworkers are important. Treat them with respect and always treat them how you want to be treated. Even if you don't get along with someone, kill them with kindness. Remember you are there to do your job you aren't there to make friends.

2. People are rude. Have thick skin.

"Can I speak to your manager?" This table is too close to the kitchen, I want to move." "I made a reservation why do I have to wait?" These aren't even the worst some people have said. Sometimes no matter how hard you try to please a person he or she is still going to be miserable, but keep trying. Don't let what people say get to you. You won't be able to please everyone and sometimes people will be mean, but don't take it personal everyone has bad days.

3. Wear comfortable shoes.

Whether you are a host, server or manager you are going to be standing the majority of your shift. It might take some getting used to being on your feet all day, but getting comfortable shoes definitely helps. Stay comfortable!

4. Smile Smile Smile.

Whether you just got yelled at by your manager or your table just left you a tip that was less than 10% or you got yelled at for not running food to a table while it was still hot; always smile. Smile through it all. Sometimes you just have to fake it until you make it. Trust me, if you have been in the restaurant business for a little while you have probably already mastered the fake smile/laugh.

5. Always tip your server.

Your server is working her/his butt off. They are not only taking care of you but they are also taking care of other tables in their section. They are not here because they want to be; however, they have to they have families, bills, and needs that they are responsible for. So always tip we aren't just doing this for fun. Whether your server is a broke college student or parent supporting their families they both have something in common they need the money. Trust me if wanted to have fun I would be at Islands of Adventure or a concert not working my butt off at a restaurant.

6. Everyone makes mistakes.

Being super clumsy and working in a restaurant don't mix very well. I've dropped glasses while customers were watching, I've bruised my legs from running into booths/tables, and I've spilled drinks. Everyone makes mistakes. You live and you learn. I learned how to carry a tray with glasses and dishes all over it. You learn the most from the mistakes you make. Don't get discouraged, keep trying!

7. Opportunities are endless.

Working in a restaurant has made me appreciate going to school and getting an education. I love working in a restaurant; however, I don't want to be making below minimum wage all my life. It has helped me appreciate the value of a dollar and helped me realize the importance of hard work. I am forever appreciative of the life lessons learned while working at a restaurant.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
