7 Things To Do When Coming Back Home For Break
Nextavenue.org

As we all know, Thanksgiving break is fast approaching and winter break will be right around the corner. It’s time to reunite with our parents, friends, and even pets that some of us haven’t seen in months. We’re so used to the fast moving college life and decision making on our own that coming back home can be a little confusing. Luckily, here are the seven things you should do when visiting home:

1. Sleep as much as you can: School gets tiring, some of us don’t sleep the regular eight hours our doctors suggest. Instead we're doing the long hours of dreadful homework given to us. Taking advantage of the fact that we have no classes, sleeping late feels like heaven. Finals are coming up soon after break, so I suggest sleeping as much as possible, because sleep is inconsistent during finals week.

2. Eat everything: Yes, the food in the school café can be pretty tasty, but admit it, you get tired of it. Eating the same meal everyday can gets old mostly when it consists of burgers and fries 70% of the time. Home cooked meals are the best when coming home. Take advantage and eat everything you can, it is Thanksgiving anyways. Let the kitchen be your new favorite place when coming home (it’s already mine).

3. Spend time with your family: You don’t see your family so often when in college, so take advantage and take some time out of your day to sit with your family. Watch a movie or play around with your siblings like old times. Help your mom out with the cooking or play some board games with your family. Any little thing can be quality time with your family.

4. Spend time with your friends: Many of us have friends who we haven’t seen since summer. Some have stayed where at home while others have gone to college across the country. During break almost everyone, if not everyone, comes home, so it’s the perfect time to catch up with old friends. We don’t see them often so enjoy the time you have with them before break ends and we all go back to our regular lives.

5. Relax at home: Relaxing is a MUST. We’re stressed and we’re tired, and we need a break. Lay around in your bed for a while and watch TV for however long you want. No one will judge you (they’ll probably be jealous it’s not them). Lounge around in your PJ’s for a while and enjoy the peacefulness before it's gone.

6. Visit places you used to go: Engage in activities and visit places you used to before you went to college. Staying home can get boring which is why this is the perfect excuse to get you out of the house and get you active. Don’t want to go alone? Bring some friends along and make it an adventure.

7. Did I mention relax?: I’m serious when I said relax. Finals are coming up soon after Thanksgiving break and stressing yourself out while at home is not worth it. Put your feet up for a while and let your break pass as slowly as possible.

Break is about giving us students a short, well, break. Enjoy it and have the best time. Have a great break, and remind yourself to pack yourself lots of snacks to stock up your fridge when you get back!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
