As we all know, Athens, Georgia is one of the best cities in the world- especially as a college student. Coming home for summer makes you realize that we take all of Athens' wonderful features for granted. Whether you're an out-of-stater or just don't get to visit often, here are five things we all, or at least I, miss about Athens.
1. Downtown
I don't know about you, but I personally miss barhopping between the 90 bars, shopping at countless cute boutiques, walking around with all my friends, and eating amazing food. Athens civilians have an innate passion to go downtown, because whether its at the Last Resort, Moonshine Bar, Fab'rik, or The Grille, you'll find everything you need.
2. Dorms
Believe it or not, I truly do miss my "brumbae." Despite the unsanitary bathrooms, disgusting cockroaches, 800-year-old unmonitored elevators, and extraordinary small rooms, living in the dorms is the best experience. You're constantly hanging out with your friends and running into everyone you may or may not want to see. Some of my best freshmen year memories took place in the dorms.
3. Papa Johns
Although this is a franchise, there's something special about late-nighting at the Papa Johns on Baxter. There's nothing more rewarding than stumbling in at 2:30 AM after a long walk from dt anxiously waiting for a large pepperoni pizza with extra garlic sauce.
4. Game Days
Everyone knows it- there's nothing like Saturday in Athens. I think we're all counting down the days until we can cheer on the dawgs again in a sea of red and black. There's no other college town that has more pride for their school.
5. Bulldog Delivery
This service is single-handedly the reason I never had money and gained the freshmen 15, but definitely worth it every time. If you don't already know, bulldog delivery is a website that has a long list of restaurants that will deliver to wherever you are- including Barberitos, Utage, Your Pie, Chilli's, and even Dunkin' Donuts. Bulldog Delivery is super useful if you're too hungover to leave the couch or just having a lazy day.
6. Spring Parties
Between Chi Phi's Lost, SAE's Shower Cap, Sigma Chi's Derby Days, KA's Cowboy Ball, and many, many others, various UGA students, including myself, would argue these are the highlight of second semester. There's nothing like spending a beautiful spring day in a flowy sun dress and cowboy boots, sippin' on a beer in a coozy or a mixed drink in a Chick-Fil-A cup, surrounded by 600 of your closest friends.
7. Dining Halls
UGA is known to have great on-campus dining, as it should be. Whether it's Bolton's omelets, ECV's smoothies, or the Niche's... everything, you (almost) always enjoy every meal. Giving up the meal plan was for definitely a hard goodbye, but if I know myself and my friends, we're definitely going to shamefully pay to go back every now and then.
Athens, we miss you. See you in one month!
