7 Tough Drinking Lessons You Learn When You Turn 21

A week and a half later and it has already lost its thrill.

7 Tough Drinking Lessons You Learn When You Turn 21

In honor of turning 21 a week and a half ago, I'm going to share what I've realized thus far.

1. Drinking isn't as fun when it's legal.

The thrill of your grandma giving you a sip of her Cosmo is part of the fun of drinking something that honestly tastes awful. When you go to a restaurant and buy a drink, it's so casual that you just feel old instead of cool.

2. Pretending you don't know exactly what drink you want when you've experimented in your basement for years is a hassle. (Your mom knows, so why bother?)

Sorry, I've been designated bartender for my family for years and if you think that I haven't sampled my work, you're crazy. I still feel I make drinks better than the bars because mine pack a punch.

3. Bars are too expensive and not worth it.

Unless you're single and boys are buying you drinks left and right with no obligations (doesn't happen), paying $5 for a shot just isn't worthwhile when you have a high tolerance and could have bought a fifth of Jose with the money you just bought 4 shots for.

4. Drinking in other countries was more exciting than this.

Canada and Spain were fantastic on their own, but buying a drink at a club that's actually fun and actually plays good music was icing on the sweet cake of sangria and maple syrup.

5. It's a waste of time.

Why get ready and go out when I can have a glass of wine, or several shots, or both, while having a girls night and not having to be pretty about it?

6. Knowing you are approaching alcoholism at 22, and not knowing how to feel about it.

Everyone says that over the next year I'm going to be an alcoholic. But can you really be an alcoholic in college?

7. The next exciting milestone in your life is renting a car at 24.

I have no words, so here's another gif.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
