The last final has been taken, I've arrived home, and despite all the blood, sweat, and tears of my most challenging semester yet, I did pretty well. As much as I'm looking forward to the holidays and ready to enjoy a few weeks of relaxation and regrouping, I'm still going to miss being at Temple and all the cool things you sometimes take for granted while you're there. Here are seven things I miss at Temple while on a break!
1. Living in Philadelphia, PA
One of the many things that make Temple such a unique place is its setting in the City of Brotherly Love. There are tons of urban campuses throughout the United States, but compared to many others, Temple is an enormous university with programs, sports, clubs, diversity, and opportunity for anyone looking to get whatever they want out of a college experience. Aside from just Temple, there aren't any limits on what you can do in Philadelphia, from shows and concerts, to unique eats, to historical places, to sports, all the way to running up the Rocky steps by the Art Museum. The possibilities are endless when you're living and studying in one of the nation's largest cities.
2. Richie's Iced Coffee
Temple has no shortage of places to get coffee around campus, and it takes true exploration to find your niche for your coveted caffeinated beverage to get through the day. My choice? Richie's! Aside from serving up some top quality breakfast, lunch, and dinner from his location at the "Food Pad," the coffee, specifically iced coffee is out of this world. Richie gives you a perfectly sized coffee with the perfect cream and sugar ratio, for the perfect price. I don't know what his secret is, but I do know hundreds of students including myself love his coffee and will miss it immensely, even if it's only for a few weeks.
3. The Tech Center
You might roll your eyes at this and wonder how a place where so many stressful hours are spent could be missed. Honestly, that's a great question! But think of it this way, where else are you going to find a place where you have state of the art technology that anyone who's a student can use? Not all MSP majors like myself have infinite copies of ProTools, professional equipment, and workstations lying around. I have some, and obviously can't nearly afford it all, but the Tech has it all! In my entire time at Temple, there hasn't been a situation where I said I couldn't do something, because everything I need can be found in that building.
4. Temple Sports
Are there any last minute plane tickets to get me to St. Petersburg for the Gasparilla Bowl? No? OK, guess I just have to watch it on TV... Hopefully I can find some time to come out to some basketball games or other winter sports, but that's hard to do when I'm at home.
5. Halal Carts
I love these carts! They're everywhere on Temple's campus and throughout the city. If you're a Temple student who's never tried Halal food, what are you waiting for? You can usually get a full meal with a drink for just five or six dollars, and Halal is a great alternative to fast food or other junk, especially if you're getting something with some vegetables. Still, I've yet to see a Halal cart anywhere near my hometown.
6. Walking Everywhere
It's one of the most freeing feelings in the world, and it can be your's too if you choose to live in the city. Being from the suburbs where you literally have to drive EVERYWHERE, walking and sometimes using public transit is a nice change of pace. College life is just too busy to have to worry about things like cars and driving.
7. Delivery!
You can get just about any food or provision item delivered when you're at Temple via apps like UberEats and GoPuff. Sadly, a lot of these services haven't made their way to the suburbs yet. It can be hard to go back to driving to the local Wawa just to buy one bottle of milk or a quick snack. The future really is now with delivery services, but at home, the only thing you can really get delivered besides Amazon products is pizza.
I'm so happy to be home, but Temple is a part of who I am! I can't wait to have an awesome Winter Break, but come next semester, I'll be happy to have these seven things back in my life.
