7 Thank-Yous For My Big Brother

I now know that deep down, you always wanted to look out for me.

We're never sappy people because that's just weird for us, but here are 7 thank-yous that you truly need to hear.

1. Thank you for being honest.

Especially when I needed to hear real honesty and not sugar-coated honesty. It may have hurt to hear the truth, but it made me better off in the end.

2. Thank you for (usually) treating me with nothing but kindness and respect.

Tackling me doesn't exactly radiate kindness, but I know you always had good intentions, despite the many bruises I've gathered over the past 18 years. Despite that, you've always been full of respect.

3. Thank you for being someone I can look up to.

Mainly because I was always shorter than you up until a few years ago and now we're at the same height (I still think I'm taller, though). In all seriousness, thank you for being a great role model and teaching me new things almost every day.

4. Thank you for helping me fix my mistakes.

Yes, I'm also talking about the mistake where I wanted to make a grilled cheese at 7 AM and I put a slice of cheese in the toaster by itself. I was like 6, okay? I didn't think things through then.

5. Thank you for being protective.

I can't count how many times you've told me that you'll bring a shotgun if needed. It wasn't ever needed, but it's nice to know it's on standby.

6. Thank you for meeting and accepting my boyfriend into the family.

I was nervous that you two wouldn't like each other, but I'm glad you did. There's never a dull moment when you two are in the same room.

7. Thank you for always having my back.

We disagree often, but you usually side with me against people, so I'm thankful for that. I get to feel like a sidekick, too. Win win situation.

I'll never take the bear hugs or the headlocks for granted. Growing up with you gave me a brother and a lifelong friend, so thank you.

Sincerely,

Your (Not So) Little Sister

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
