7 Struggles Quarter System Students Face With Having Semester Friends

If many of you are like me, you have good friends that go to different schools. What's worse than the distance between my best friend and I? The fact that I'm on the quarter system and she's on the semester system. Here are 7 struggles only quarter system students can relate to while having semester best friends.

1. Starting the new school year a month apart.

You and your best friend just had the best summer of your lives together and all too suddenly, she has to leave and go back. Heavy-heartedly, with tears streaming down your face and pints of Half-Baked Ben & Jerry's, you spend the next month vicariously living through her turn-up Snap stories every weekend. While your weekends look like...

2. Finally starting school and being bombarded with midterms while they're still on syllabus week.

Week one for semester students:

Week one for quarter students:

It's your first week back at school and you already have a midterm, three speeches, five projects, and ten quizzes. Your semester best friend -- who has been in school for over the past month -- has maybe taken a test, done maybe one or two projects, and have had maybe a handful of quizzes.

3. Having different midterms/finals weeks.

Me without my best friend to support me:

Because midterms start week one and basically don't stop until finals week, quarter system students take both midterms and finals earlier than semester students. One of my favorite sayings in life is, "If I go down, you're doing down with me." However, this can't be applied to this tragic situation, and I'm forced to face midterms and finals all by myself without my best friend's shoulder to cry on.

4. Having different winter breaks.

You finally take your last final for fall quarter and you're excited to head home for home-cooked meals, free laundry, and finally reuniting with your best friend. However, she is just now entering finals week. So you mope around for another week and think of magnificent plans to do with her when she returns home.

5. Starting Winter Quarter before Spring Semester begins.

Seeing your semester friends at home being carefree, well fed, and happy:

After two incredible weeks of catching up and being inseparable, you have to leave your best friend and return back to reality to begin winter quarter. You're stressed with how hectic week one already is and how much your winter quarter sucks, while your best friend is still lounging around back home for another month.

6. Having different spring breaks.

Spring Break with your best friend goals:

Not being able to go to Cabo together and spend countless hours tanning on the gorgeous blue beaches and drink endless piña coladas together because of different spring breaks sucks. I'm starting to begin the universe is against the idea of semester students and quarter system students being best friends.

7. Starting Summer Break later.

Wanting to join in all the fun of your semester friends:

It's June. You're stressed, depressed, and not even well-dressed because it's too hot out to look cute. All you yearn for is to be laid up by the pool in your cute new Victoria Secret bikini with your best friend on one side and a pink lemonade on the other. However, you still have two more weeks before all hell can break loose. So you cry, and study, and cry some more.

Although it is difficult having a semester best friend while being a quarter system student, I do believe the distance and time just makes our friendship stronger. I'm grateful to have somebody who will calm me down and listen to me while I'm having my fifth melt down of the week during midterms/finals week and I'm ecstatic to come home to such a great friend.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
