1.Traffic in your neighborhood is heavy because there are so many schools.

Even if the schools are a good ten or fifteen minutes away from your neighborhood, the traffic is coming from the back roads, the highway, and any other road you can think of. You have high school juniors and seniors, parents, and the big yellow school buses going down the road. So, wherever you’re going, you pretty much know your ride is going to be a little longer than usual when school gets out.

2. You know everyone in your neighborhood.

You don’t necessarily have to have a relationship with your neighbors, but you’ve more than likely learned their names and some of their habits and routines, because when you live in the suburbs you see your neighbors a lot, even when you don’t communicate with them.

3. Speaking of your neighbors, there’s always an unofficial competition when it comes to holiday decorations.

After Thanksgiving, it’s time to start putting up the holiday decorations, and you always want your house to be the most festive on the block; and that can mean putting up millions of colorful Christmas lights or having a dozen Christmas blow-up decorations, whatever it takes to win.

4. Also, you’re jealous of other people’s front yards.

The next-door neighbor recently got new colorful flowers or planted a new tree, or maybe they put out a bird bath; but the point is, their front yard looks great. This can make you feel a little bit jealous and soon you’ll be going to the nearest plant nursery, Lowe’s, or Home Depot to look for the exact same plant or decoration, or something you think that will make your yard look even better than the neighbor’s.

5. The nearest Target is one of your favorite places to shop.

Sure, the mall has a lot more options, but we don’t always have the time or the money to go there. Good news is, there’s probably a Target 10 to 15 minutes away from your house. It’s definitely a place to go for make-up, clothes, groceries, hair care products, video games, decorations, etc. What more can you ask for? Just be careful, you can end up spending a lot more than you expected in there.

6. Seeing stray cats and dogs do not scare you or surprise you.

They could belong to someone, it’s not unlikely for cats or dogs to escape the house, but unless it’s an animal you’ve seen or it has a collar it’s probably a stray. That doesn’t mean you won’t try to give it love and attention or take it home to keep as your pet.

7. You’re always looking for somewhere new to go.

You have to admit, even when you thoroughly enjoy your suburban town, you can get easily bored going to the same places. So, you’re always looking for new places to go, and when you do go somewhere different you learn just how much more there is to a neighborhood; like how quiet and spacious a mountain town is, or how crowded and busy a city can be.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
