You did everything together in high school or even throughout grade school. You saw the best and the worst of each other (not to mention the awkward years that we like to forget). You had some fights and major life experiences that tested your friendship, making it even stronger. But when it came time to your senior year of high school, you realized that the one thing you wouldn't be able to do together is attend college.
It may have been sad for a few months when you first left your best friends behind, whether it was for a school across the country or just 30 minutes away, but one thing you learn in college right away is that you will still make an effort to keep in touch with and bounce right back into rhythm with the people who really are lifelong friends.
Once you get over the ache of having your bestie far away from you, you start to realize all the amazing things that come out of having best friends at different universities.
1. A New Place To Visit:
Your best friend's school may not have even been on your college list, but now, it rests at the top of your bucket list of places to visit due to its new found attractiveness. And of course this is due to the fact that one of your favorite human beings goes there. Isn't it everyone's high school dream to party with their best friends in college?
2. Different Perspective:
Along with visiting your friends in college, hanging out at a different school can sometimes be a culture shock. Some colleges center their lives on Greek life while others may be all about their sports teams. What dominates your friend's night life may be very different than what you are used to, but it's always fun having a change of scenery and partying with different kinds of people every now and then.
3. Exchanging Stories:
One of the best things about having a best friend at a different school is being able to share all the ridiculous stories from your adventures in college. I know that sometimes the highlight of my Sunday is talking to my friends about all the scandalous (and slightly embarrassing) things I did Thursday, Friday, and or Saturday night. This will obviously be done when you are procrastinating from doing your many piles of homework.
4. Remembering The Good Times:
This is not saying that college is not a great time in itself, but one of the things I love about going home during break is re-laughing about all the great times I had with my best friends back home. And even better, you get to have those phone calls that consist of all the "Remember whens" that usually proceed with you almost peeing in your pants and embarrassing yourself in public. Thus, talking about your younger days with your best friend can really brighten your day when you are feeling especially homesick.
5. Great Listeners:
If you are having problems with your roommate or are just feeling especially stressed out in school, your best friends are always great at listening to your rants and are probably better at giving you unbiased advice on what you should do with your current friend or boy/girl problems than your new college friends. Remember, this person knows the "old you" and knows that you don't take crap from anyone. And therefore, will be able to give that big pick-me up speech about how to deal with your problems.
6. Your Motto In School Is "No New Friends":
Just kidding. It's undeniable that you will make new friends throughout your journey through college. You may even find new people in your life that you can call your best friend in college, but you know that wherever you are you will always belong to your main crew of friends back home.
7. Someone To Come Home To:
Even if you haven't seen your best friend in months from an extra heavy work load and a limited amount of breaks, you look forward to going home not only to see your family but to see these people too. They aren't obligated to stay close to you now that you have moved on to an even bigger world than before and neither are you, but they are your best friends because you both try to make it work no matter how far away you are from each other. Because when you come home for winter break or surprise them on their birthday, they will always be happy to see you and ready to jump back into life together just like the good old days.
