When it comes to choosing a vacation spot, beaches should always be at the top of the list. Sure, you could go to a famous city in Europe, but when it comes down to the grindstone, the majority of people opt to go to a beach — whether in America, Mexico, or some exotic island…the possibilities are endless. Basically anywhere you go, the beach is the most desirable location. And I’m going to tell you the different reasons that make this true:
1. The sound of the ocean
You can tell just from the fact that ocean sounds are programmed into sound machines and apps made to recreate relaxing noises that it’s simply one of the best sounds on earth. The repetitive whooshing is enough to let anyone fall asleep, or at least reach a peaceful state of consciousness.
2. Building sand castles and other sand structures
Regardless of the fact that sand inevitably gets everywhere, the action of putting effort into making things—from sand castles to sand furniture—out of sand is a great way to work with your hands and get your mind off any problems you’re currently facing. Even as an adult, I find sand construction to be enjoyable.
3. Reading on the beach
Though I’m often distracted by my fellow beach-goers, reading while relaxing on the beach is probably my favorite place to read ever. Toes in the sand, the sound of the waves…there’s nothing else like it.
4. Being in the sun
While soaking up rays is something I try to avoid with my pale complexion, I can’t deny that the sun on my skin feels amazing. Even if there’s a breeze, the sun automatically begins to warm you up and let you appreciate your time on the beach.
5. The sunsets
It’s as if nowhere else in the world can create the same hues of pink, orange, and purple that sunsets over the beach can. I guess it has something to do with the light refracting off the water—though I’m just an English major here, so that’s only my guess—but they are absolutely incredible.
6. Finding shells on the shore
You could buy shells at a souvenir shop, sure, but the experience of finding your own small shell, or in some cases even a flawless conch shell or a living hermit crab, is unmatched to this retail escapade.
7. Everyone is always happy
If you’re on the beach and you look around, you will find this is very true. Everyone has a smile on their face while partaking in various beach activities. It seems like the worst things that can happen there are getting a sunburn or finding sand in less-than-desirable places, making the beach an unconscious booster of happiness.
I don’t know about you, but the beach—almost any beach—is one of my favorite places in the world. When imagining the picturesque environment, all I can do is smile.
