As girls, we have an undeniable desire to feel beautiful, and what better way to feel beautiful than after getting your nails done. We have all been there – you walk into the salon. You get hit with the strong sent of nail polish and the polish remover as you admire the gigantic wall display of tiny bottles all organized by color. The experience of getting acrylic nails is designed to be relaxing, inviting and making you want to come back again and repeat the process. Although the process of getting your nails done can be a dream, it’s the adventure following the pampering that really sucks for girls. Here are the seven reason why although getting your nails done can be relaxing and fulfilling, there are still downsides to the process.
1. Every day hand use takes a turn
As young adults, we all know that money does not and will never grow on trees. Which is why spending your money on your nail appearance probably isn’t the best investment choice. Since they break so easily and our real nails are always trying to sneak out from under the fake ones, if you want your nails to stay on fleek, you have to get them re-done at least every other week. If you want any longer, there is a big chance that the color will start to fade away, there will be a higher risk of one of your nails jumping ship and leaving you with four pretty nails instead of five, and as time goes on, if you don’t get your nails redone, the fake nail will be hanging so far up your real nail, it will look like your nail is wearing a nail hat or that your nails can grow nails. So take care of that before it gets to this point.
2. Color and style make all the difference
We are constantly on the move using our hands and fingers continuously for different tasks. From texting on our cell phones to opening cans of soda, easy daily tasks that we take little time to think about become instantly challenging when your fake nails are pressed on. If you don’t get your nails done often, this change can be surprising and a bit of a setback. You’ll find yourself asking your friends to help you button your shirt or struggling to fit your fat fake nail underneath a soda cap just to get a drink. Easy mindless tasks become as hard as winning the Hunger Games without Katniss Everdeen on your side - practically impossible and without the odds ever in your favor.
3. There’s a matching rule
As if we needed another reason for people to look at us and comment on our appearance. Due to the fact that we can’t leave each other alone and all be friends, there is a certain code of appearance that comes with how a girl should wear her nails. Your nails can tell a lot about you. Depending on your chosen color, you might come off dark and edgy or you might take on the appearance of a teenage girl that’s madly in love with Justin Bieber (but after the release of his new album Purpose, who isn’t in love with him). Darker colors can give off a sad, moody look, even though the only statement I’m making by choosing to wear black nail polish is just that I just like the color black. Other colors such as yellow, orange or pink can come off strong and happy colors, but also a little immature. Perhaps implying that you still own your childhood Barbie doll collection and that you secretly may even still play with them. So, colors can be a little tricky. The style of the nail can also have its own importance. If your nails are really long, you can be perceived as stuck up or full of yourself. If your nails are really short, people might see you as a tomboy, or a girl that only got her nails done because her friends dragged her along with them to the nail salon against her will.
4. When they break – you’re screwed
This also goes hand in hand with the color rule. If you’re wearing a yellow t-shirt and your nails are red, you don’t want to appear as if you’re sponsored by McDonalds. Although we have our beloved colors that we adore, it can be hard to match them with what we want to wear, making getting up and getting ready in the morning even more of a struggle.
5. They can get nasty
This has to be the absolute worst part about getting your nails done – when they break. Perhaps it was a week and a half after you got them done, or it was only a few hours after you walked out of the salon. Regardless of when it happened, your nails have betrayed you. You go about your day, hoping that no one offers to shake your hand or ask you for directions. You shamefully hide your hands in your pockets of in the front of your hoodie, rubbing against your naked nail that was so peacefully hiding under the fake nail until it decided to break free like Troy and Gabriella from High School Musical. The betrayal couldn’t be more real.
6. Ouch! It’s damaging my real nail.
Okay, let’s admit it. Even though we are girls, we still can accumulate some pretty nasty stuff under our finger nails. We could be typing on our computers, peacefully studying in the library and still end up with black gunk underneath our nails by the end of the day. With fake nails, it can be even worse. Due to the inflexible hard shell of the nail, it can be a lot harder to clean out the inside of the nail. Resulting in mine fields of nasty stuff under there. Our nails start to resemble the bottom of our brother’s bed – the place where you dare not venture to or look under.
7.It can be pretty pricey
Although we love having our fake nails and being able to flash them to the public around us like we’re hand models, our real nails suffer underneath the fashion show. During the process that goes on prior to getting our fake nails on, our real nails have to be filed down to fit our desired nail appearance. They also are given a coat of glue before the fake nail is placed, damaging the surface of our nails. With the lack of oxygen and care to our real nails, once the fake nail is removed, our real nails look so sad and deteriorated, like puppies asking for a piece of your meal. Since the nail hasn’t grown properly in weeks, it isn’t as strong as it should be. So although on the surface our fake nails can appear pretty and flashy, under the surface our real nails are crying and listening to Drake in their sorrows.
Even though there are so many pros and cons to getting your nails done, at the end of the day getting your nails done is a relaxing and stress-relieving experience. You’ll almost always leave the nail salon feeling amazing and flawless like Beyoncé.
