If you’re a student athlete in college, you’ve most likely had your fair share of injuries. Whether it’s a serious injury, a minor one, or even some really sore muscles, being away from home when you’re hurting really sucks. Here are a few reasons why:
1. You want your mommy and daddy all the time
Whenever something goes wrong, especially an injury, all you want is for your parents to take care of you. They’re not going to think you’re a baby if you cry, or pretend like your injury isn’t a big deal. Parents know exactly how to take care of us when we’re hurt and know exactly how to make everything better. When that’s not an option because we’re hours away at school, you really start to miss the loving care of your parents.
2. Screw these stupid twin-size dorm beds, I want my bed at home
Nothing’s worse than trying to get comfortable in a tiny twin size bed when you’re injured. Don’t even think you’ll sleep for a couple if you have to keep your leg propped up on some pillows in a bed that barely has room for your body. In time of injury, the only bed that would keep you adequately comfortable is the bed you’ve been sleeping in almost your entire life at home.
3. Not to mention the stupid tiny showers
Showering is already tough enough with an injury. If you have some kind of cast you can’t get it wet and you have to wrap it up in trash bags and keep it away from the water. Or if you can’t stand very well you may need a seat, and I guarantee there’s not much room to fit a little stool in there. College showers are tiny, so I guarantee if you get an injury, showering will become less often than usual.
4. Even small campuses are big when you’re on crutches
Good luck crutching to class every day. When you’re on crutches 120 yards feels like a mile. You’ll be winded and sweaty before you even make it half way to class. Plus you already haven’t showered for a day or so, so hopefully you’re not getting too stinky from all that sweating.
5. Heavy doors are everywhere
Is there such a thing as a light door? Sure, sometimes people are around to hold the door open for you, but other times you’re trying to use the only good arm you’ve got, or trying to prop open the door with your crutch. Overall you just look like an idiot and eventually someone comes running to help you. Those handy handicap buttons are always nice, but it seems like half of them never work.
6. Who decided to put stairs everywhere?
Nothing’s better than trying to crutch up, or drag your sore and beaten up legs up a flight of stairs. I mean was it really necessary to put those random steps in the middle of campus? Sure it looks nice but a ramp probably would have looked nice too. Or, you could have just flattened the land and made the sidewalk flat, that would have been cool too.
7. I think my friends are starting to hate me
When you’re injured you can’t do much for yourself so you’re constantly texting your friends for help. If they were family it’d be no big deal, they have to help you. But with friends, you wonder when they’re going to start hating driving your butt to class every morning at 8 a.m.
Overall, injuries are just the worst and college campuses don’t make them any easier. Keep your head up though and keep on crutchin’, you’ll get through it!
