AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) came to us in simpler times, back when hanging up angrily on your cell phone was so much more fun when you could actually snap your Motorola RAZR shut and getting a new ringtone could make your day. But AIM might have very well been the original social media champion. Here's why:
1. It was acceptable for you to specify how you wanted people to contact you (don't you hate getting a call from someone when you really only wanted them to "txt the cell'?)
2. It was easier than ever to block people (and then unblock them) when they were pissing you off, and it was acceptable to do so. Blocking people on Facebook these days isn't taken quite as lightly.
3. Choosing the right away status and quotes for your profile were the original subtweets, anyways. And it was always okay to specify which Avril Lavigne song you had pulled the quote from.
4. It was a lot more informal than texting, but a lot less confusing than having to dissect why your crush liked your Insta but forgot to say hi when he saw you last night, because he totally thought that your away message meant you weren't going to be out anyway.
5. When you were the first one who deciphered those cryptic initials in your friend's profile, you could then proceed to let everyone know that "JDG<33333 4.3.07" meant that Emily and Jake were TOTALLY dating and you knew it first.
6. You could complain about your life without it being an annoying Facebook status that no one wanted to see on their news feeds. You're tired after school, then basketball practice, then hanging with the girls? No one on AIM will judge you for putting your away message on so you can finally go to sleep.
7. Instead of having to edit your photos in about five different apps before they looked good enough to put online, you could brag about having better friends than anyone else by simply alluding to an inside joke that may or may not actually be an inside joke at all: "Tuesdays 7th period ugh!!! (u wouldn't understand, inside joke w Allieeee lol).
