600 Miles From Home

600 Miles From Home

When I received my acceptance letter to Colorado State University, I experienced that, "wait, this is really happening" feeling. I was going to leave my friends and family I grew up with at home in Dallas, Texas, and make my way into a new state with new friends, a new lifestyle, and a new home. I was so incredibly excited to do my own thing, experience something so different from the busy city, and start college! From dorm shopping, finding a roommate, and waiting for what seemed to be the longest summer ever to come to an end, I was ready to make my way to Fort Collins.

August came around and we were shoving the car full of room decor, clothes, and a lot of unnecessary dorm items. At the time, of course, it was necessary to have a Brita Filter and three boxes of Ziploc baggies. Move-in day was quite the adventure. Two families in each room helping their kids set up their dorm in ways that will give them maximum space, but at the same time, making the room look cute and organized. When the room was finally set up, you say your final goodbyes to your family until the first break comes around. At that moment, I had my second "wait, this is really happening" feeling. It was a lot to take in but I was so excited to see what was next.

Those next few weeks I met some of the coolest people ever. I met my college bestie Georgia, rushed a sorority, (receiving the best big ever, love you Lauren), and cheered on the rams at The Rocky Mountain Showdown... I soaked up every minute of it.

There were times when I felt being 600 miles from home would get the best of me. I saw my friends back home, who's school was only an hour or two away, be able to go home for the weekend and spend time with family. Whenever they felt homesick they always had that option. At times I really wished I had it too, but, with all these wonderful people I have met along the way, I couldn't imagine going anywhere else. When I go home for breaks, it feels like nothing has changed. 600 miles has nothing on me. I can't wait to see what these next 3 years have in store.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
