6 Tips for Accomplishing Your Goals in 2018

We have made it to yet another year: 2018.

When the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, excitement fills the air as everyone imagines in anticipation what the next 365 days will hold for them. At the turn of the new year, it’s tradition for people to make new year’s resolutions in an effort to ensure that their goals for the new year pull through.

Nevertheless, 92% of new year’s resolutions fail. But don't fret, you don't have to be clumped in with this percentage! There are ways to successfully accomplish your New Year's resolution.

Here are a few tips and tricks for accomplishing your goals in 2018.

1.Set a realistic goal.

Don’t set yourself up for failure. Make a SMART goal: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely. If your goal is SMART, it is most likely to be a success. Set goals that you know that you can achieve with a little bit of elbow grease and dedication.

2. Surround yourself with supportive people.

This can be your family, your friends, your boyfriend/girlfriend, or even your dog! Find someone that is going to help drive you towards your goal. These people will be the ones that will lift you up when you start to struggle.

3. Believe in yourself.

As cheesy as it sounds, you need to believe in your capabilities in accomplishing your goal. If you don’t believe in yourself, your goal won’t happen. You are capable. Stick that in your heart and cling to it always.

4. Roll with the punches.

Anything worth having doesn’t come easy. Don’t let setbacks discourage you from pursuing your ideal life. There will be difficult moments. There will be times when you feel as if you cannot win. But press on. You can do it.

5. Enjoy the process.

Many of us get caught up in what life will feel like in the end. “I’ll be happy when I ____”, you can fill in the blank. It’s a common practice to do this, but it’s unfair to yourself. You can be perfectly happy with where you are at right now. Be happy knowing that you are working on yourself, and you have accomplished the hardest step: starting towards your goal.

6. Have a life outside of your goal.

Don’t let your goal consume you. Making your goal into the main focus in your life is not always healthy. Although all goals are different, this point is important to keep in mind. It is easy to become obsessive over a goal. Ensure that you still have balance in your life in whatever you choose to pursue.

With these tips, you are equipped to accomplish your goals in 2018. I know you can do it!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
