Some days are heavy, flooded with feelings of frustration and unshakable sadness. Sometimes those days leave us feeling defeated and hopeless. On the days I find myself unable to get out of bed, weighed down by my worries, I remind myself of the following:
1. It's OK to feel sad. Sadness does not indicate weakness. Your feelings are valid. Acknowledge every fleeting emotion and allow yourself to work through them rather than pretending that they don't exist. Sometimes crying can help, sometimes venting can help, and sometimes a warm chocolate chip cookie can help.
2. You are not alone. Emotions are human; sadness is human. Whatever you are feeling, someone else has felt it. Others have endured the hopelessness and the heartbreak. If they can survive, so can you.
3. You are not a failure. You are worth more than your mistakes. You are allowed to lay in bed and watch Netflix for an entire day. Failing to check off every item on your to-do list doesn't make you any less valuable. You are immeasurably worthy. You may fail, but you are not a failure.
4. You are loved. You are loved so much more than you know. There are people who live to hear you laugh, love to see you smile, and relish in the thought of you. Even on your worst days, someone, somewhere, is thinking of you.
5. You are capable. You are able to find glimmers of happiness, even during the worst of times. Your potential is too extreme to measure, even if you're unable to recognize it. You are able to cultivate change and make a difference in the lives of those around you. You are powerful.
6. You are strong. This is not your first bad day, and it won't be your last. Think of the countless bad days you have already made it through: Your track-record is flawless. You will continue to survive; your strength will defeat the darkness.
It is important to remember that even the worst days come to an end. Your life will move forward, into the next 24-hour segment. But if you ever find it too difficult to continue, remember that there are resources available to you. You are surrounded by support and opportunity, so allow yourself to be helped. Reach out to the people you trust and, together, create a plan. You deserve the world.
