6 Things You Learn Growing Up With Brothers

Brothers seem to be a whole other species.

Brothers are a chore. It's as plain and simple as that. As you're young and starting to grow up, you wonder if the torture of always being surrounded by farts and constant, loud video games will ever end, and you realize it won't. You know it won't stop, but you learn to accept and be right along side them. You grow together and they show you a whole new view of the world, a view from their eyes. Here are some lessons you can only learn from brothers.

1. How to fight

Wrestling is inevitable; whether it be playful fights or harsh punches, it's going to happen. There can be times when you're sitting on the couch and all of a sudden someone is pinning you down and you know it's time to fight. There are also times when you plan a sneak attack on them when their back is turned. Either way, they teach you how to defend yourself and fend off your attacker.

2. Never hug them after practice

I am 100 percent serious. My brothers have played baseball and football, and one of them is in a JROTC program and you never, ever want to be around them when they come home from hours of football or PT. I love my boys, but goodness can they smell. Then again, so can we, so I guess we're pretty even.

3. People can be harsh and you need to learn how to deal with it

Brothers are some of your hardest critics, but they teach you the most. You put of with constant bickering and obnoxious insults for years and you learn how to thicken your skin and fight back. You know you love each other at the end of the day, but in the moment you an be very harsh to one another.

4. Be careful where you walk in the bathroom

This is truly disgusting. If you have never lived with a male, consider yourself lucky. Especially being the oldest, you get to witness the horrors of potty training and terrible aim of younger boys. They don't always grow out of it either, so beware.

5. You deserve respect

Watching your brothers interact with people and seeing how they treat those around them makes you realize the kind of respect you deserve from people. Brothers show you that you should expect nothing less than the best from people.

6. Someone will always have your back

All in all, brothers are your best friends. They always stick up for you and defend your honor because only they can make fun of you. Never piss off a girl with brothers because you will be facing your worst nightmare.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
