Mindy Kaling is best known for her role on "The Office," as well as starring in and producing her own show, "The Mindy Project." Despite her insanely busy schedule, she somehow has had time to write two best-selling books in the past three years. Her first book, “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)” is a great read but its follow-up, "Why Not Me?" is the real deal. As funny as she is on TV, Kaling uses “Why Not Me?” to tell hilarious stories about dating failures, filming sex scenes on TV, and why weddings are the worst. But that’s not the only reason you should read this book.
1. Mindy is ridiculously relatable.
Despite being so connected to everyone through technology, it's easy to feel pretty alone sometimes. Enter Mindy. Every chapter in her book is a different story, and even if you've never dated a white house staff member, it's not hard to find something to connect with in each anecdote.
2. You will laugh from beginning to end.
Sometimes, you need to laugh at yourself, and Mindy's not afraid to do just that, as well as let you laugh with her. I was reading this book one night in my bedroom and my roommate texted me to tell me she could hear me laughing through the wall... if that tells you anything.
3. This book is all about self-confidence.
If you’ve ever woken up, looked in the mirror and not felt confident in yourself, this book is for you. Sometimes, it's easy to put ourselves down but this book will make you snap out of it. Mindy acknowledges that we all have our bad days (she includes a picture of Golum from "Lord of the Rings" as an example of what she looks like before her hair and makeup get done), but she is also the first to promote self-acceptance and self-worth, which every college student needs a little more of.
4. "Why Not Me?" will make you want to go out and achieve all the goals you've ever had, ever.
Too often we're told we're not pretty enough, smart enough, thin enough; the list goes on and on. Mindy thinks that's a bunch of crap. If you want something, if you believe in something, then work hard and you'll get there.
5. It's all about embracing who you are, even if who you are is a struggling college student who has no clue what they're doing.
We've all had our rough nights, and even rougher mornings, and Mindy gets that. You're going to struggle sometimes and that's okay. Reading about Mindy's rejection and some of her failures will remind you that everything is not the end of the world, and there's always a silver-lining.
6. When you've finished, you will ask yourself, "Why not me?"
Nothing in life is easy, and if you want something you better be willing to work hard for it. The important thing is that you know you can do anything, and if you can't remind yourself of that, let Mindy Kaling.
