6 Promises To My First College Roomate

And a little thank you, too.

6 Promises To My First College Roomate
Gene Karla Tolentino

As we’re entering this new season of our lives, I wanted to write something to you. In particular, I wanted to attempt to make a few promises as we move forward. It’s going to be tough for all of us, but I think together we can make it through.

So, future roommate, here are my promises to you:

1. I promise to be patient

This one is definitely something that will be difficult for me, but I promise I’m going to try my hardest! I promise to be patient when problems arise. I promise to be patient when we’ve both got late nights staying up for finals. Patience is something that will be extremely hard, but I will work to do my best, for you!

2. I promise to be honest

I promise to make honesty my first and foremost duty to you. I want to come out of my freshman year able to tell people you’ve become one of my closest friends. This, I believe, works closely with honesty. I promise to be honest, even when it’s tough.

3. I promise to be kind

Even when I’m frustrated -- I promise to be kind. Maybe this falls under the whole “I promise to be patient” point, too. I promise to be kind to you and around our future friends.

4. I promise to be bold

This one might sound a little odd. I promise to be bold. I want to be able to help us when others can. When situations arise, I promise to be humbly bold in situations. I promise to be bold so that we can make friends, I promise to be bold so that we can be better friends.

5. I promise to be understanding

I want to be the type of person you can come to, late at night, with anything. If we have to stay up late to talk something out, we can do that! I promise to be understanding for you.

6. I promise to be authentic

Though this sounds quite similar to honesty, I promise it’s not. I promise to be authentic. I want to be completely real with you, even when it’s tough. I want to be true to myself and not fake. As I walk in late at night from a long day, I promise to be authentic by combining all of these attributes aforementioned -- patient, honest, kind, bold, and understanding. Authenticity is probably the hardest thing on this list, which is why I made it last. It combines everything together. For you, I promise to be authentic.

I also wanted to thank you ahead of time. Thank you for being these things with me, too. I know this is a big step in our lives for us, but I’m positive we can make it through this journey together!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
