I can’t tell you how many times people have said, “Oh, you poor thing,” upon finding out that I have four brothers, I’m the only girl and I’m right in the middle. Their reaction is almost comical.
Growing up as the middle child and the only girl may seem like it would be difficult, but it actually has its perks.
Here’s a list I’ve compiled of the perks of being the middle child and the only girl.
1. You get your own room.
I have four brothers, two older and two younger. The boys all had to share rooms when they were younger, while I got my own room. I didn’t have anyone to argue with, except maybe my mom on occasion, about how I wanted my room decorated or what color walls I wanted.
2. No sharing clothes or toys.
There was one point in time that I remember wanting a sister, but I’m actually glad I don’t have one. If I had a sister, we would’ve fought over which Barbie we wanted to play with or as teenagers, we probably would’ve gotten into fights about stealing each other’s clothes, makeup, and other things. Again, I’m glad I don’t have a sister.
3. You have unpaid bodyguards.
Even though this seems like a pain in the butt, it’s really not. I’ve learned to appreciate it over the years. It’s not only my brothers and my dad who do this, but it’s also their friends. Yeah, they can be overprotective, especially when it comes to me dating, but all they’re doing is looking out for me because they love me and I love them even more for it.
4. Your mom is your best friend.
My mom and I are close and we spend a lot of time together. We both lean on each other for support because we’re the only women in a household full of men. I’m grateful to have such a wonderful relationship with my mom and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
5. You can trust your brothers to always be there.
The bond between siblings is almost unbreakable. Whenever I was in school plays, or had concerts for chorus, they would always come, sometimes they would even bring me flowers to show their support. And if I ever needed something, I know every single one of my brothers would come running to help. Even though they get on my nerves most of the time, because that’s what siblings do, I love my brothers.
6. You’re a daddy’s girl.
My dad and I used to have daddy-daughter dates when I was younger. It would just be the two of us. We would go out to dinner or go catch a movie. I always loved going out on dates with my dad and I looked forward to it.
I know it may seem like being the only girl out of five siblings would be difficult, but it’s not. It’s actually sort of a blessing in disguise. I wouldn’t ask for it to be any other way.
