Valentine’s Day is here again, and for those of us living the single life, it can be an awkward time of year. Everyone else is celebrating their love and relationships while giving us, their forever-alone friends, the side-eye and wondering when we’re finally going to start dating someone. But Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be awkward—here are the 6 best parts of being single when February 14 rolls around.
1. There’s no pressure.
While everyone else is panicking, trying to find their significant other the perfect gift that shows how much they care (without giving the wrong impression), we single folk can just sit back and watch the chaos unfold.
2. You don’t have to socialize.
If you’re in a relationship, chances are you’re going on some sort of date to celebrate Valentine’s. For some people, that means getting dressed up in something other than sweatpants and being forced to go out in public. Not a concern for the single introverts of the world—we can stay in our sweatpants and binge-watch Netflix to celebrate.
3. Leslie Knope had the right idea.
If you do want to socialize on Valentine’s, you probably have at least one other single friend who’s in the same boat. Channel Leslie Knope from Parks and Rec and celebrate Galentine’s Day instead of Valentine’s.
4. Anti-Valentine's is an option.
If, instead of being indifferent, you’re someone who hardcore hates Valentine’s Day, don’t worry—anti-Valentine’s Day is totally a thing. It’s called Singles Awareness Day, and there are millions of other people out there writing articles, throwing parties and creating Internet memes all about hating Valentine’s Day and everything it stands for. Since you’re not in a relationship, you can enjoy all of the Valentine’s hate without feeling guilty.
5. You’re free to ignore Valentine’s Day.
If you’re indifferent to Valentine’s Day, being single means you can completely ignore it with absolutely no guilt or consequences. It’s not Valentine’s Day—according to Liz Lemon, it’s Anna Howard Shaw Day.
6. February 15 is National Cheap Chocolate Day.
Okay, maybe it’s not an actual holiday, but it should be. Everyone knows that the arrival of February 15 means that all of the Valentine’s Day themed chocolates and candy that weren’t sold the day before are now going on sale—and you don’t have to be in a relationship to buy yourself chocolate. Whether you’re single or not, take advantage of the sales and stock up on your favorite candy.
Happy Valentine’s Day/Galentine’s Day/Singles Awareness Day/Anna Howard Shaw Day!
