6 Things College Students Miss About School When Home for Break

The holidays are my favorite time of year and I love spending time with my family, but I think most college kids can agree after being home for a few days there are things we miss about being at school. And if you’re a college kid and don’t miss school after being home for a month, you might be at the wrong school.

1. Living with your best friend

I know not everyone is as lucky as me and is best friends with their roommate, but it must be the thing I miss most about school. I miss having someone to have sleepovers with every night, get ready with, eat with, watch TV with, and basically just do everything with. It gets lonely sleeping alone and I miss living 10 steps away from my best friend.

2. There's always something to do

Being home is nice, but it can get boring. There’s only so much to do in your hometown. At school, there’s always things going on. Whether you’re going out on the weekends, going to meetings for a club, or even to the library to do homework, I am always staying busy. Not having anything to do is nice at first, but can eventually drive you a little crazy.

3. No parents

I love my parents to death, don’t get me wrong. I love spending time with them. It is just a bit of a weird adjustment to go from being completely on my own at school for four months, back to checking in with mom and dad anytime I go anywhere and being back by curfew.

4. The campus

I even miss just the feel of campus when I’m home for a long time. I miss how beautiful the campus looks and walking through it to go anywhere. Something about cornfields and farms just doesn’t quite compare to IU’s Sample Gates.

5. The dining hall

Before you think I’m crazy, hear me out. Yes, I prefer my mom’s homemade cooking over dining hall food just like anybody else. What I do miss, though, is the easiness of the dining hall. Mom is not going to prepare me a full meal for every meal of the day for a month. The dining hall is always there with food ready that I do not have to prepare myself. Yes, I get sick of the same options all the time but it is still better than the cereal or PB&J that I make for myself at home.

6. Living down the hall from your friends

This goes along a little bit with always having something to do. Whenever I’m bored at school, I can walk down the hall and hang out with my friends. When I’m bored at home….it’s not so simple. Now we are states apart for a month and I miss them. Texting and snapchatting every day just isn’t quite the same as being with them all the time.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
