When I was little and my mom was at work when my little sister and I could not fall asleep my Dad would put us in their bed and put on National Geographic. I remember watching the rain forest, deserts and all kinds of animals pop up on the screen. I remember thinking how amazing it is that this is our world our planet. At that moment I have always had a fascination with documentaries. Throughout my 19 years I've watched a ton so here are my top 6 favorite.
1. "Before the Flood"
Climate change is one of the biggest issues to my generation today. This amazing documentary educates all who watch it on this extremely important issue of human impact on the earth. Who doesn't mind looking at Leonardo DiCaprio for a little over an hour am i right?
2. "Gender Revolution: A Journey with Katie Couric"
This documentary follows Katie Couric on her quest to learn the always changing term of gender. This topic is something that is extremely important to me and my generation. This will open the eyes to anyone who is confused or has questions about the new coming gender revolution.
3. "How to Die in Oregon"
This heart-wrenching story follows people who are participants in Oregon's "Death With Dignity Act". This act allows terminally ill patients doctors to prescribe them lethal prescriptions to end their own life. This documentary educated me on something that I knew nothing about to someone who is a strong supporter of this act and how it helps bring closure to people who use it.
4. "Cowspiracy"
There has ever been something that made me more proud to be a vegetarian (soon to be vegan). This documentary opens the eyes of the views about how large one's carbon footprint can be just what they eat on a day to day basis. For instance, did you know that one of those hamburgers you and your friends had the other day is equal to 660 gallons of water? Yeah, it's absolutely crazy. You better watch this so your more aware of how you can save the world.
5. "The Hunting Ground"
As a college student, this one hits home pretty hard. This documentary follows current college students and graduate students on their experience with sexual assault during which is supposed to be the best four years of your life. These stories of these women and men helped me become more aware and more educated on something that many bigger organizations keep on the low.
6. "Miss Representation"
There is not one documentary that I've seen more than this one. Attending an all-female high school, this documentary was played in pretty much all my classes at least once This documentary shows what sexism truly feels like and how the media affects millions of girls every day. This is not only empowering but helps educates all people on how they can light girls up not drag them down.
