As someone who likes to take on a lot of activities at once, stress used to be a good friend of mine. It is easy to get caught up in trying to avoid it, i.e., finding ways that won't actually relieve your anxieties. However, instead of letting stress run your life, there are easy ways to find outlets for it, while still being productive.
1. Dance (and sing).
Turn up the radio and dance. I’m not talking cute dance moves, I’m saying hairbrush in hand, no coherent dance moves (flailing is OK). In all seriousness, there is major joy in dancing around to your favorite jam and letting yourself completely go for the duration of three minutes.
2. Clean.
Sometimes, the best way to get your mind off things is cleaning. There is no better feeling than a completely cleaned and reorganized closet, right? So get out that dust rag, maybe your Swiffer, and go to town cleaning your room. Peace of mind will definitely come from a clean and refreshed space.
3. Adventure.
Get out in nature! Go for a drive and feel the fresh air on your face. Being in nature does wonders for the soul. Even if you just walk outside and take a deep breath. A change of scenery is always helpful when you are tryin' to get out of your mind for a while.
4. Exercise.
For some, exercising and getting endorphins flowing is the way to work through any problem. Whether it is a leisurely walk in your favorite park or a high intensity work out, moving your body and getting your blood flowing can change your mood in an instant.
5. Journal.
Put your thoughts down on paper. Yes, it is hard to just sit and write. If you’re like me you will have already found five other things to do before actually sitting down with a notebook and pen. I would suggest putting on some music and making a comfy space to sit and journal for a little bit until you feel calmer and ready to face the day again.
Life is hard. College is hard. Sometimes, it just seems really difficult and overwhelming and that’s OK! It’s totally alright to take some time for yourself and relax. Take it from someone who gets chronically stressed out -- these ideas help. It’s all about finding the right approach for you and some days it may be one over the other. I would suggest any way you can find joy and peace in de-stressing is the right method for you.
