Periods are a woman’s worst enemy. Why is there so much blood? Why am I so emotional and cranky? It sets off anything and it's like a sensitive alarm in women, all just to say, “Hey girl, you’re not pregnant!” like wasn’t there a better alternative?! Anyways, here are the 5 worst things about periods:

1. The Cramps

The cramps are the worst part about being on your period. Though this varies with every woman, every one of those women can testify that cramps are the most uncomfortable part of having a period, especially during the day. As someone that works and goes to school, the cramps can come suddenly and randomly. You can be talking to a cute guy at the library and BOOM it just hits your lower half of the body and you have to literally sweat it off. The worst part is you have to act normal and as if periods are nonexistent in society.

2. The day 1 of periods

Day 1 of the period cycle is normally the heaviest day. I would go through a lot of super tampons just to survive. This is so miserable when you wake up in the morning or in the middle of the day during work to look down in the bathroom and go “OH MAN...I really had to start my period now?!” then you have to stop everything to get a new pair of underwear and tampon.

3. Mood Swings

One moment you are so happy and having your life together and the next you are on the floor crying over a minuscule issue in your life. It can really scare anyone around you and if you have a man… they should tread carefully during this time. Hearing the “you on your period” can really trigger a nerve for some reason. You easily cry over the saddest love movie or song and just constantly wiimper about anything, even your next door neighbor’s dog. Why?! Blame it on the hormones.

4. Cravings

You are doing so well on your diet then suddenly you crave the strong desire for junk food whether its sweets or salty foods. You cannot stop thinking about the sweet taste of chocolate cake as you stare down at your bland dry turkey sandwich and you so badly want to break that diet.

5. Bloating

Okay, so you break the diet...so what right? Then you realize you went overboard on that junk food at 8 pm and you can really feel the bloat in the morning. This is where the mood swings kind of mix in where you think your life is over because no one can love you because you have no self-control and you're losing that body. It’s okay, you're just emotional!

Periods are something that all women have to endure and suffer through at one point, but why must it be so taboo for it to be mentioned in public or to have a tampon just lying around. Women have to run to the restroom while hiding that tampon in her sleeve or pocket. If we have a stain showing on our pants, then it’s humiliating and a public embarrassment which is odd since so many get it, as natural as using the restroom. So even though periods are can be horrible, it should be accepted more.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
