5 Ways to Treat Yourself

With Valentine’s Day this past week, there were some men and women who were single on this holiday that is meant to shower your significant other with love and gifts who felt a little bit alone, myself included. I sat in a restaurant waiting for my friends to arrive when I took the opportunity to look around and noticed couples who were in love. To waste some more time before they arrived, I logged into my social media accounts and saw pictures and posts of presents that my friends and followers were either gave to their loved on or received.

While I could see the love in the air around me and on my phone, it made me want some of my own; to one day having a boyfriend to show me that he loves and cherishes me as the princess I am. I know that we all wish to be in a relationship where we are loved by the other and showered with their love and gifts of appreciation like the one I wish for.

During this time, I realized that I needed to treat myself and to make myself happy and love me because loving who you are is better than any relationship could give you.

These are five easy ways to treat yourself either every day or once in a while.

1. SWEETS

Cupcakes, brownies, cakes, candies, ice cream, gelato, etc.

We all have our favorite sweets that love to eat whether we are sad or happy. Coming from a family that loves to cook and bake, this was a thing that we love to do with one another.

You can either bake them yourself or go to the store and buy them. Either way, stuff your face with the sweetness and enjoy, even if you get a sugar rush later.

2. BINGE WATCH MOVIES

We all have our favorite movies that we love to watch or the new ones that just came out on DVD or on Netflix.

I have spent an entire weekend watching movies that either I love or new ones that make me feel better. They range from your Action to Romance to Musical to Family.

Go get some of the sweets, wrap yourself up in a blanket, and enjoy the movie.

3. GO OUT BY YOURSELF

This one was hard for me personally to do since I don’t like going out alone. It took some convincing from my mom to go out this past Friday. Driving out to the winery and pulling up, I realized I needed this night to meet new people and experiences. Ordered a glass of wine and watched a friend of mine preform with her band.

You can to the local Starbucks, restaurant, coffee shop, bar, go shopping, or get a message. The outing can be anything you want to do.

Going out by yourself makes you feel a scent of freedom/liberation that brings a happiness that you have never felt before.

4. QUIET TIME

Who enjoys a good bath with a book and a drink of your choice? I know I do when I don’t feel like myself because it made me focus on me.

More ideas to do are to paint your nails, put on a face mask, write in a journal about how you are feeling, or sit in silence and think about the future. These are just a few to do. Find the ones that you want to do and make you happy. Just enjoy the peace and quiet.

5. GIVE YOURSELF COMPLIMENTS

In our society today, all we hear or see how the perfect person is supposed to be, look, or act. We also put ourselves down on a daily basis. Why do we allow ourselves to feel this way about who we are?

Write down compliments to read every day to lift your spirits and mood. I find mine on Pinterest and read them when I need to hear it. Self-loving is a key to happiness.

Treating yourself allows you to focus on you and your happiness. Go crazy for a day or make it last an entire weekend.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
