With everyone always focusing on how to get a "beach body," it's time we shed some light on the best ways to keep your mind and body healthy this summer. The school year is exhausting and stressful, and you rarely ever have time to truly take care of yourself. This summer, make it your goal to get every part of yourself healthy before you return to school in August!
1. Give yourself time to relax.
Coming home from school is exhausting. You've dealt with finals, moving out and adjusting to being home. It can be really tempting to get home and pack your schedule full of friend visits and summer excursions, but give yourself a little bit of time to recover from school. If you pack your schedule right when you get home, you'll be exhausted and burnt out by the end of May, and you won't be able to enjoy the rest of the summer. Take it easy after moving back home—it's good for both your mental and physical health.
2. Eat cleaner.
No, girls, I don't mean cut out carbs or eat nothing but lettuce and lemon juice. And guys, this doesn't mean add whey powder in everything you drink and eat straight chicken and steak. In fact, the average American eats way too much protein and not enough carbohydrates. The result of an overload of protein? Osteoporosis and kidney stones. Yikes! Instead, focus your diet away from heavy meats, dairy and various animal products, and aim toward more fruits, veggies and nuts. Fruits and vegetables will leave you feeling clean and refreshed while keeping you well hydrated—a summer must! Meanwhile, a diet free of meat and dairy will lessen negative health side effects and make you feel light and happy while letting you eat as much as you want. Skip the steak and potato dinner and trade it for a 30-ounce smoothie on the beach.
3. Bond with those you love.
This can be your family, your friends, or even your pets! Summer is all about getting away from the stress of school and focusing on relaxation, and what better way to do so than by hanging out with your loved ones? Head to the beach with your best friends from high school. Plan a game night with your family. Go hiking with your dogs or build a play set for your cats. Being close (physically or otherwise) with people who are important to you releases oxytocin, a chemical that can control happiness and bonding. This means that relaxing with friends or family does more than cheer you up, it can keep you happy long-term!
4. Enjoy the weather.
Believe it or not, the beach is not the only way to have fun in the sun this summer. Hiking, hanging out in an Eno hammock, or even just reading a book outside are great ways to enjoy the weather and soak up some vitamin D. Even though the weather can change moods in a second, you can still enjoy summer storms—curl up inside and read or have a movie night with your family! Taking advantage of the sunny days is not only good for your mind, but also great for your body. Getting up and active keeps your body moving, while also keeping you happy and relaxed.
5. Try new things.
We know your school-year routine: school, homework, parties, Netflix and a general pile of exhaustion. Summer is your chance to break out of the boredom! Take a spontaneous day trip to the mountains with your significant other, or use your free time to make crafts for your dorm room or apartment. Find a job or volunteer position that's outside your comfort zone, even if it's just a few hours a week. Find new places near you to explore! Chances are you have several fun parks, trails, or markets you've never even heard of before. Satisfying your wanderlust cravings will leave you satisfied and relaxed, and ready to tackle your next school year!
