The scariest part of college for me was trying to find a not weird roommate that I could actually bond with. Like every other girl, I wanted the typical “my roommate is my best friend” relationship that you see in most movies.
Surprisingly, after months of stressing over the thought of my roommate being someone that I absolutely hated, everything seemed to work in my favor.
1. You Have Saved Them From Sudden Death (MULTIPLE TIMES)
Whether they accidentally starve themselves or dramatically pass out in the student health center, it’s always a good idea to be a mom figure. From personal experiences, I can honestly say that first semester of freshman year is ROUGH, so having mom support is always needed.
Whether your mom ability is reminding them to eat or preventing them from procrastinating a huge essay, it’s always nice to know that you’re saving someone’s life.
2. Random Jam Sessions Happen Often
Hopefully, your roommate is a better singer than mine but if not, I feel your pain. Although they might absolutely annoy the crap out of you and choose the worst songs to scream at the worst times, deep down it brings out the tiniest bit of laughter.
This can also happen vice versa, don’t be afraid to be that roommate that runs around and serenades them at the top of your lungs at 11 p.m.
3. They Join In On Your Facetime Calls
Let’s be real, the only thing that determines if your roommate will truly be one of your best friends is if your friends from back home like them. Sometimes, they just happen to be listening in on a conversation that requires them to share their personal opinion.
It only takes one conversation to have your friends asking to talk to your roommate over you, whenever you’re on the phone. Even getting advice from their facetime friends is great, because the chances of you meeting them are very low.
4. You’re Both Able To Tell Stories About High School Experiences
I remember my first awkward conversation with my roommate like it was yesterday but awkward conversations are something that you’ll be able to laugh about later. As a freshman in college, the first things that you actually talk about is what you did in high school and how you expect to “change” in college.
I’ve personally been told how my stories made me sound cooler than I was, so don’t be let down if you’re roommate wants to be a changed person.
5. Netflix Is Cherished By The Both Of You
In college, Netflix is a must. Even if you have a TV in your room, the chances of you actually using it are slim to none, unless you’re watching Red Gerard and Shawn White shred their way to gold at the Olympics. Netflix is a big way to bond with your roommate.
Whether introducing them to shows that they’re missing out on or watching the same show. Occasionally, a tear might be shed for the death of the main character, and they need to be able to understand and comfort you in your time of grief.
Overall, what you put into your relationship with your roommate is what you get out of it. I wouldn’t trade the laughs, good and bad memories, or the craziness of my roommate for the world.
Life tip: Don’t let your first impression of stalking them on social media determine the memories that freshman year of college can bring. I genuinely can’t wait to see what the future holds for our friendship.
