If you’re like me, then you are so incredibly excited to go back to school, begin new experiences, meet new people and learn new things. The beginning of each school year has so much potential, and it is so exciting to think about all the possibilities.
If you are like most people however, summer was a magical retreat from responsibility, and you're dreading the inevitable return to the normal world. The sheer amount of stress caused by registering for classes, finding said classes and figuring out how to function as a student once again can cause anybody to go crazy. If this is you, don’t worry, because I’ve come up with a list of things which are essential to staying sane while going back to school.
Sleep
One of the most important things you can do for your body is to get enough sleep, although this is easier said than done. Transitioning from a summer sleep schedule to waking up for an 8 a.m. class everyday can be incredibly challenging. It can also be tempting to stay up late talking to new friends and roommates.
Because it’s important to start the quarter off right, make sure you go to bed nice and early before the first day of class so you are well rested and ready to learn. Giving your brain a rest will help it kick back in gear and start working again!
Wake up early
While it is incredibly important to give yourself lots of time to sleep, it’s also really helpful to wake up early before morning classes. Waking up early can be so helpful in reducing stress, because it gives you time to really prepare for your day. No more getting up 15 minutes before class starts and running to campus in your sleeping shirt and leggings! Having time to shower, organize your school things and tidy up a little does wonders for your mood throughout the day.
I have found that I am much less likely to forget important things when I give myself time to get ready, and I usually have time to eat an actual breakfast, which is so important for your health. Having a few extra minutes to relax before starting a chaotic day makes a huge difference.
Exercise
If nothing else, exercising on a semi-regular basis provides an amazing outlet for stress and anxiety which comes with the start of a new quarter. Establishing a consistent workout routine is like meditation. It can be a way to let those emotions out in a productive way.
Regular exercise also helps establish a routine, which is incredibly important when starting a new quarter because it helps me stay on track. If I know I am going to the gym before class and have to do homework the night before, I am so much more likely to get it done.
Stay organized
I know this is definitely a hard one. I struggle with it a lot of times too, but staying organized is the single most important thing you can do for your mental health. When your life is a mess, it can add to an already stressful quarter, and can be totally avoided by taking a little time every day to reorganize your world.
Whether it is a planner to manage your time, or organizing your room or kitchen, a little goes a long way. Starting out the school year organized is the best way to keep stress down, so you don’t have to do it all when classes start.
Try new things
Fall quarter is the beginning of a new school year. It is so full of possibility and excitement. Take advantage of this fresh start to try new things! Avoid falling into the same rut as last year and go on an adventure, try a new sport, start a hobby. Seize the potential this year has to offer and don’t be afraid of anything. New experiences can be such an amazing way to challenge yourself and figure out what motivates you. You may find yourself loving Yoga and wonder why you never tried it before.
Try to see your fall quarter as a fresh start, instead of ripping you away from summer fun. Let it be the year to be organized for once, stay healthy and take care of yourself. School can be stressful, but taking care of yourself and staying on top of things can really help keep you sane this fall quarter!
