With high school graduations coming up, a lot of students have to worry about college and who they'll be sharing their living space with when they go away to school. While many roommate situations work out very well, some people are not as lucky. Through my college career I have experienced both good and bad rooming situations, and have come up with some warning signs that maybe you and your roommate shouldn't live together in the future.
1. Lack of Communication

2. Cleanliness

A lot of the time when applying for housing at school, you are given a form to fill out describing what kind of roommate you are. If you're typically messy or clean, etc. If this is the case, answer honestly. If you are moving off campus or your school doesn't offer this, be very aware and be sure to ask these questions when searching for a roommate. If one person is doing more of the chores or one constantly leaves their things everywhere, you're bound to be unhappy or get frustrated.
3. Sleep Schedules
Being on similar sleep schedules is also super important. This doesn't mean that you need to wake up and go to bed at exactly the same time every day, but it does mean that you should be aware of peoples sleeping habits when finding a roommate. Do they stay up late? Do they take naps throughout the whole day? Will you have to worry about tiptoeing around them constantly? These are all things to ask before committing to a roommate.
4. Night Life
There are typically three types of college students: the ones who party until they're sick, the ones who aren't really into that scene but go anyway, and the ones who wouldn't be caught dead at a college party. Make sure you know which one you are (most of the time) and know how your roommate is as well! You don't want to come home to an unknown (back to lack of communication, kids) - or maybe unwanted - party one night, nor do you want to come home to a bunch of people getting sick and making a mess of your space. Be very aware of the kind of people you're moving in with!
5. You Simply Don't Get Along
Some people in the world just don't have that roommate-chemistry that you need to live with someone. And while that is completely okay, you do need to try to catch it as soon as you can. And when you do realize that maybe this isn't working out, go meet new people! Make new friends, and see if you can find someone you do get along with well. Constant bickering and frustration with a roommate is never fun, and lets face it, college is hard enough.
