In a world with so much to do, we can forget to relax and get a good night's sleep. Being a college student only makes the task of getting the recommended 8-9 hours of sleep becomes even harder. The following tips can help anyone fall asleep easier at night and get ready for the next day.
1. Turn your electronics off
As it hard as it may be, putting all your electronics off to the side can really help you fall asleep. The bright lights from your TV, computer and phone can really delay the whole falling asleep process. Turning the electronics off and putting them out of sight will definitely help you fall asleep quicker.
2. Do a relaxing activity
Before getting ready for bed, doing a relaxing activity like reading or having a cup of decaffeinated tea will help relax your brain and let it know it's ready for bed. Doing a relaxing activity like this 30 minutes to an hour before bedtime will allow your body to get into a routine and eventually fall asleep easier at night.
3. Don't study in your bed
Keeping your bed to strictly sleep will allow your body to relax and fall asleep faster. Doing activities like studying in your bed will create a stressful environment and make it difficult to relax and go to sleep at night.
4. Try not to overthink
This one is definitely easier said than done. We all tend to think about everything we have planned for the following day or the test you got back that day that you didn't do so well on. What's done for the day is done, limiting how much you think about these things in bed will help ease your mind and therefore relax.
5. Have a snack
Having a light snack before bed, like carrots and hummus or almonds will help fill your stomach without stuffing it. Having something in your stomach will help you rest easy and fall asleep sooner than if your stomach was growling all night.
6. Exercise
Exercise, Exercise, Exercise. This seems to the solution for so many things in life. And yup, here's another benefit to exercise. Exercising regularly will release endorphins and reduce stress during your daily life. Going for a jog every day can help you to fall asleep better at night.
7. Watching your napping
Personally, I LOVE naps... I mean who doesn't? However, napping can totally throw off your sleep cycle and cause you to have trouble falling asleep at night. If you are going to nap during the day, try and keep it to a 15-20 minute nap and not a 3 hour snooze session.
8. Warm showers
Taking a warm shower or bath before you get into bed for the night can promote muscle relaxation which... yup, you guessed it, can help you fall asleep easier at night.
9. Don't get into bed until you are sleepy
Finally, try and not get into bed until you are actually sleepy and ready to turn off that phone and get into bed.
