With the hustle and bustle of life, we can lose touch with ourselves and let ourselves go, because well it’s easy too! At the end of the day all you want to do is grab something fast to eat, relax, watch some TV and go to bed. And to be quite honest, those days are quite frequent in my life. I’ve recently had the reminder that the first step in living a extraordinary life is taking care yourself. And who doesn't want to live an extraordinary life? So here a 5 tips to a healthier mind and body!
1. Sleep
Being a college student, the word “sleep” is a word you don’t hear often. Each day when I rest my head on my pillow, I’m forever left wishing that there were more hours in the day to do the rest of my uncompleted tasks. But sleep is so incredibly important. Your mind is constantly going and going all day it deserves a break. So do yourself a favor and try, TRY to go to bed at a decent time. Your body will thank you when you wake up the next morning.
2. Healthy Eating
This tip is the hardest for me to follow, but is one of the most important. What you put into your body truly does matter. When you eat unhealthy food with a lot of fat, sugar and/or sodium, it slows your body down. Now believe me, I love Cottage Inn as much as the next person, but try to save it for a time when you're REALLY craving it. Or ya know, after a wild night out in East Lansing. I know that healthy food doesn’t always taste the best, but Google was created for a reason! There are so many healthy ideas and recipes online! A personal favorite of mine is Pinterest- they are STOCKED with a bunch of healthy ideas. So do yourself a favor and nourish your body with good food.
3. Physical Activity
Besides putting good food into your body, it’s highly important to work out your body as well. Working out or doing any sort of physical activity gives your body a boost of natural energy. Not only does it give you a little pep in your step but, it is also a great stress release. I love going on long runs, it’s a great way to just clear your mind for a while and remember that whatever your stressed out about probably isn’t as bad as it seems. Running isn’t your thing? Try going on a walk, biking, yoga or zumba! There are so many different ways to get active! Especially in a college town like East Lansing!
4. Get Outside!
This is my favorite tip! Get outside as much as possible! The fall season is absolutely gorgeous! Breathe in the crisp fall air and soak up the faint but beautiful sunshine! It's going to be winter soon, restricting a lot of outdoor activities, but it's not winter yet so... GET OUTSIDE! Take a walk with a friend, grab a blanket and do homework on the grass, sit outside and people watch, go on a hike! Admire how gorgeous our earth truly is!
5. Productivity
Nothing makes a day better than going to bed knowing that you got a heck of a lot done. Being productive in college seems like an everyday thing, but you and I both know that there’s some days where you just don’t feel like doing anything. (I experience these types of days at least 5/7 days out of the week lol). But sometimes you just got to give yourself a little push to do that one last task on your two do list! And once you get it done? It's the best feeling ever!
6. Positive Attitude
Last but not least, you need one heck of a positive attitude! Having a good attitude each day is hard let me tell ya! But I've realized if I'm being a debby downer, it makes a hard day 10x worse. You have to constantly remind yourself to look on the brighter side of things! Slap a smile on your face and fake it till you make it! Plus if you're in a groovy mood, everyone else around you will feel inclined to be as well!
Good luck!
