Are you involved in every activity on your college campus? Do you constantly feel drained because you spread yourself too thin time and time again? Does your calendar that is chocked full of lunch dates, sorority events and club meetings make your head want to explode? If so, then you are officially classified as an over-committer and you need to get a grasp on the marathon we call life. Don’t fret though, because I have just the tips to cure you of this life-taking disease and assist you in finally achieving the (somewhat) balanced life that all of us fun lovin’ college kids long for.
(Disclaimer: I too am one of you, but we will get through this together!)
1. Figure out what you're passionate about and ditch the rest.
You’re not going to do anything well that you don’t care about. And maybe you will, but you’re not going to enjoy yourself while doing it. Everyone thrives in something, so figure out what that is and thrive.
2. Learn to say no.
It’s as simple as that. There will be people who want you to join them in something that you don’t want to do and you don't have to do it. Personally, I have begun to feel so relieved when I turn something down that I know will only drain me. Just throw a whip and say “swerve.”
3. You don't have to please everyone.
I know it sucks to let people down, but at the end of the day, true friends will understand and respect you. Everyone feels overwhelmed sometimes, and I guarantee they have been in your shoes at some point, if they aren’t current over-committers!
4. Saying 'never mind' is not the end of the world.
Sadly, you are going to find yourself in a position where you need to give something up and that's OK. Staying true to your word is important, but if a certain activity has a negative impact on your life, give that joker up. Your pride isn’t worth it.
5. Say 'never mind' today!
If you feel like you fit the profile of an over-committer, go ahead and drop something. Figure out what you dread going to, and just let it go. You will feel so much more free and energized. All jokes aside, it’s not good to spread yourself too thin. You will be more successful if you pour yourself into a few things that give you joy.
These are some of the best days of your life, and you need to live them to the fullest -- yes, I know I’m cheesy! Your happiness and well-being does matter. You will have a more positive effect on the people around you when you feel like you have a handle on this messy, yet beautiful life. Rid yourself of the blood-sucking, looming, downright exhausting lifestyle that is over-commitment!
