5 Tips for the New Semester
GoAlong

For those of you returning from a long Winter Break, here are 5 tips to help you get back in the swing of things.

5. Study, regardless of how early it feels

Nothing bad ever came from being a studious student. Sure, some people will call you a nerd and make fun of you, but you'll be the one laughing when they're the ones stressing out about finals in May. It's always a good thing to stay on top of your classes, because you never know when you won't have time to study. I know that life happens, and man does it happen fast and unexpected, so keeping up on your studies is important. It's especially important because your teachers won't always be 100% understanding of things going on outside of school.

4. Learn to balance things, not juggle

I know, you're thinking "But you just told me to study all the time!!!" and you're right, but not completely. Even though you should keep up on your studying, too much studying can be bad for you in many ways. Studying too much can actually hurt your knowledge retention because you start to overthink everything, which causes you to lose information. It will definitely hurt your social life, shocker right. If you study all the time, you don't make room for your friends or significant others, which can end up hurting you in more ways than one. Also, most of you will have a job, and it's nice to be able to make money, but at the same time, leave room for yourself. You don't have to be a juggling clown, just learn to balance it all.

3. Get sleep... Like really, sleep

If you're anything like the normal college student, I bet last semester you spent too much time worrying about grades, friends, drama, and potential mates, to sleep properly. Sleeping is super helpful for your body and brain, and inadequate sleep can severely harm them both. So sleep, try to get at least 6 hours of sleep each night, if you can get more, then shout out to you. Try to stay ahead of the game (ahem, number 5), and then you won't have to worry about pulling 4 all-nighters in a row.

2. Stay close to those important to you

This goes without saying, but honestly it's important. Having a strong support system behind you is one of the best things ever. They are the people who you can always run to if you need help, if you're feeling overwhelmed, or if you just simply need a break from anything. Life gets to be too much some times, everyone knows it, and nothing is better than having someone who you know can always be there for you.

1. Breathe.

After all, it's only school. They're only classes. And it's only drama. Everything has a beginning and an end, right? Life, races, songs, shows, movies, lines, buffets, etc. Everything is always going to either get better or will just go away. Yes, I know classes will be very demanding and stressful, but after that, you're one step closer to your degree and life goal. So just, breathe. Breathe, and you will be able to overcome anything.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
