1. "You talk white."
I don't really know what "talking white" means and I don't really care to learn. My parents taught me to speak clearly and made sure I understood the importance of having a good vocabulary. I'm sure yours did too.
2. "Well, you're not really black."
Well, in a literal sense, no. I am not really black. I am just as much Hispanic as I am black but I don't think you're referring to my genetic makeup. You're referring to the fact that I live in a nice neighborhood with educated parents who have stable jobs. You're referring to the fact that I'm not the stereotype. These kinds of comments are borderline racist and not okay. Stop saying it.
3. "Can I touch your hair?"
No. You can't.
4. "Which side would you pick if you had too?"
*Cue the dramatic eyeroll
5. "Good thing you can say you're black on all your college applications. You can get in anywhere."
You're right! I'll also be sure to mention my 4.2 GPA and 30 ACT score while I'm at it!
