5 Things You Know If You're An ASL Student

If you've taken American Sign Language, you know what I'm talking about.

Taking ASL (American Sign Language) has by far been one of my best decisions in college. The language and culture is absolutely incredible, and truly has become important to me. I sign every single day, and truly believe I will keep up with it for the rest of my life--including teaching my children and family. I wish everyone had the opportunity to take it, but if you're an ASL student you can definitely agree on these five things:

1. Quiz and test days are the only time you don't sit in the hallway till class starts

Sitting outside of the classroom in the hallway, talking about signs you don't understand, or what the LMC video was for the week is a daily experience. However, on quiz and test days, you better be standing at the door ready for the class before you to come out because if you get a bad seat for the quiz or test and can't see the screen that well, then be prepared to fail. Getting a prime seat on these days is something every ASL student can agree with, even if they don't admit it.

2. You go to five Deaf events in one week because you didn't go all semester

You always think "oh, I'll go next week," or "the semester just started I have so much time," but suddenly you have one week to turn your events in and you haven't gone to any so you end up skipping class and forgetting about any homework or social life to attend your five events.

3. You sign to your friends who are also in ASL at a bar or other public place

Creepy guy at the bar talking to you? Send help via ASL. Need to get milk at the grocery store but your roommate is two aisles away, sign it to her. In a meeting and want to tell your friend something before you forget? Sign it in your lap. Honestly, it comes in clutch on way too many occasions.

4. You love Tim Sheets

He's probably your favorite professor at the university, and you could sit and sign with him all day. Even though the first week was super terrifying because he's Deaf and you didn't think you would ever be able to communicate to him, now seeing him walk down the hallway of Phillips hall you can't wait to smile and wave and ask him about his weekend. If every professor was like Tim Sheets, I think I would enjoy going to all of my classes.

5. And you really hate LMC videos

But like honestly, why?!!?!?!?!?!?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
