5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To College

We all knew college would be full of surprises, but this is what I really wasn't expecting.

5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To College
Abigail Asselin

1. You will spend all of your money.

I think we all knew we would be spending a lot in college, but as far as my savings goes, I wasn't expecting to spend all of that. You're going to want to go out to eat with your roommates, buy new outfits for game day, and get new things as seasons change. No matter if it's tuition, books, housing, or just a sweatshirt with your school logo on it, you're going to buy it.

2. You will lose a lot of motivation that you had (or may not have had) before college.

In high school, I felt like I was always motivated to get things done, even with a busy schedule. I was always on time with everything, and if not, I was ahead of the schedule. In college, you get lost in your free time, and suddenly one more episode of Netflix turns into twelve, and you haven't accomplished anything. Having a different schedule day to day is exhausting, and makes it so much harder to get things done efficiently.

3. You will get lonely.

At the beginning of the year, everyone is on a college high and is totally oblivious to the fact that after the first few weeks, your roommates aren't always going to be around, and your friends back home are going to start getting too busy with their own schedules. Everyone starts to spend their free time differently as the year goes on, which usually means you'll end up sitting in your room wondering how people even make friends in college. Eventually, you'll start actually looking forward to class, just so you can see some familiar faces for once.

4. You are going to be hungry most of the time.

Yes, there's meal plans. Yes, there's groceries. But the dining halls get so old, so fast. If you're trying to avoid the freshman 15, you can scratch all of the fast food on and around campus off the list. So that pretty much leaves you with whatever groceries you buy that don't require using a stove or oven if you're in a dorm. Who knew we would get tired of the frozen meals, too? Remember when I mentioned running out of money? You probably won't be going to the store very much anyways.

5. You are going to miss home, a lot. But your school will become your new home.

Undoubtedly, we all miss home sometimes. Whether it's our family, our pets, our bed, our house, or our hometown, it's safe to say that we all miss where we came from. But no one really mentioned that it's not a bad thing to miss home. Especially because if you are where you're supposed to be, your campus will feel more and more like home each day as you get accustomed to it, and every trip you make back to your hometown will start making you ready to get back to campus as soon as you can.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
