I love my dog more than I love most humans, and there are days (and by there are days, I mean every single day) where I wish she could understand more of the human language so that I could tell her a few things. So here you go, Ellie. Here are a few things I wish I could tell you:
1. I wish you could talk.
Not only do I wish you could understand what I’m saying to you, I also wonder what is going on inside of your head. Are you thinking, “Wow these people are weird.” And, “Why do they keep talking to me in that weird voice?” I know that you have to be thinking a whole slew of funny things in that little (actually big 'cause you’re a massive dog) head of yours, and I want to know what every single thought you’re having is.
2. Thank you for always being there.
You're literally always there for me. You can’t really drive and go anywhere, so you’re there every day when I wake up, and when I get home from work or school. You’re there when I’m sad and really don’t want to talk to anyone, and you’re there when I need some cheering up.
3. Can you live forever?
Sometimes (most of the time), I wonder why dogs have such short lifespans. I’ve already had my heart broken once by the death of one dog, and I really don’t think I could handle another one. Dogs are the most lovable, selfless beings on the planet and it’s really not fair that you can’t live for as long as I do.
4. You really need to stop all of the sniffing and the barking and the whining.
I love almost every part of you, but when I take you for walks, and you sniff the same spot on the ground for 30 minutes, it’s a little much. And when you see another dog that doesn’t come over to play with you, keep your barks to yourself. And don’t even get me started on the whining. When you’ve been fed, taken out, and there is obviously nothing you need, I can only play tug of war with you for so long.
5. I love you, a whole lot.
I have a big family that I love, but you, my big pup, are one of my favorites. You have such a personality that sometimes I forget you’re a dog. You're sweet, and you give me hugs (not just letting me hug you, but you actually lean into me and put your head into my chest). You're always happy when I come home, or when I wake up, and you fill my heart with such happiness, that no non-dog owner would understand. Dogs are the best gift to humans, and I am so lucky to have one of the very best dogs in the world.
