There's no shame in my dog lovin' game.

Confessions Of A Shameless Dog Lover
Emily Shea

I think it's about time that I dedicate a piece to all the dogs out their, especially mine. I own three dogs: Baby, a black lab mix that is 14 years old; Meredith, a pitbull mix that is four years old; and Clark, a jack russell mix that is also four years old. Although Clark is the only dog that is truly mine, as I recently adopted him so I could have a companion at my apartment, I have grown up with Baby and Meredith. Each dog holds a very special place in my heart, a place that no human relationship could ever take the place of. There's something so unique about the relationship you form with a dog. Even if you don't have one of your own, if you love dogs like I do, you understand that they're such innocent and lovable souls. As a dedication to my love for all dogs, here are ten confessions that I, a shameless dog lover, admit to:

Confession #1: My dogs are better than yours.

Sorry, but I am always going to be biased towards my dogs. I live with them, I pick up their poop, I feed them, I snuggle them, and I love them with all my heart. I will still love your dog, but when it comes down to it, my dogs are ultimately the best.

Confession #2: I have more pictures of my pups than I do anything else.

Eating. Sleeping. Walking. Playing. Barking. Chewing. It doesn't matter what they're doing, I have pictures of it all. There's something about looking at pictures of my puppy dogs that always cheers me up. Their happiness is contagious.

Confession #3: If I see a dog in public I absolutely have to pet it.

I'm pretty sure I took this picture in the Earth Fare parking lot. I saw this cute little guy and simply couldn't help myself. I love petting dogs. Even if I see a dog that's a couple blocks away, I will go out of my way to give him some lovin'.

Confession #4: I will always cry when the dog dies in the movie.

All I can say is that you better have plenty of tissues ready if we are going to watch any movie that even hints at the death of a dog. I cry the entire two hours of Marley & Me simply because I know that the dog dies at the end.

Confession #5: I automatically like you a thousand times more if you own a dog.

This isn't to say that I won't like you if you don't have a dog. But if you do, you automatically get some extra cool points. Being friends with people who have dogs means we can talk about our dogs together, complain about the weird things they do, and schedule endless puppy playdates.

Confession #6: Puppy snuggles are the best.

There is nothing that snuggling up with your dog and taking a nap can't fix. Sometimes when my life feels like it's flying out of control I'll just lay down next to my dog, shut my eyes, and allow myself to drift off. There is something so comforting about their relaxed nature.

Confession #7: When my dog is happy, I'm happy.

When I look down and see my dog's happy smile I can't help but to feel happy as well. People ask me, "How do you know that your dog is smiling? Just because their mouth is open and they 'look' happy doesn't mean they actually are." But, it's not about they mouth, or the face, really. It's the eyes. Look into your dogs eyes and if they're happy, I guarantee you'll know it.

Confession #8: The first dog you own will always hold a special place in your heart.

This is my first dog, Baby. We adopted her when she was 4 years old and when I was starting middle school. This poor dog has seen me go through all the strange phases of growing up. Baby, I truly apologize for all the weird stages of development that you witnessed. I've made so many unforgettable memories with this sweet girl. She is the dog that stole my heart. She showed me how owning a dog changes your life. She showed me responsibility, loyalty, love: all the qualities I had heard dogs have, but didn't know until I actually owned one.

Confession #9: I can never stay mad at a dog.

Oh, Clark. It's a good thing you only ripped the cover and not the pages. But, seriously?! How could I be mad at that pitiful face! My dogs have ruined countless pairs of shoes, clothing, and dozens of charger cords. Although, it really doesn't matter because I can't for the life of me stay mad at them. Sure, they'll get a good scream out of me, but after 10 minutes of them sulking in the corner I'll wave my white flag and walk over with a handful of treats and apologize for my outburst.

Confession #10: There's nothing that compares to the love you get from owning a dog.

The unconditional love you receive from a dog is like no other. It's different from human love. It's an unspoken bond, a beautiful relationship that is formed by actions instead of words. It's the look in their eyes, the subtle nuzzle of their snout when they want attention, the large sigh they release when they finally find a comfy position, the jig they do when they want a treat. It's the loyalty, the act of listening without judgment or apprehension, the ability to always love you regardless of all the craziness going on in your life.

I just want to mention that my dog, Clark, has sat snoring next to me the whole time I wrote this article. The other two have decided to bark at each passing car, the neighbor's cat, the wind, and the squirrels. The only reason I can think of that they would do such a thing is purely to drive me mad. That's the thing, though, no matter how much my dogs drive me crazy I can't not love them. Alright, either it's extremely windy or there are a thousand squirrels stampeding into my front yard. This must be my cue to stop writing about my dogs and actually give them a little attention. Those little scoundrels...

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
